Confronted with internal and external demands, arts education has continuously evolved from an “education in arts" into both an “education through arts" and an “education for life." As a result, arts education, by restoring its inherent principles and expanding its external values, has become encountered today with the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The Seoul Agenda: Goals for the Development of Arts Education, which was adopted at the Second World Conference on Arts Education held in Seoul in 2010, provided a new way forward and a detailed action plan for arts education. This new agenda is also in line with mainstreaming the principles and values of ESD in arts education.
The goals of ESD will be achieved not by developing a new curriculum for ESD, but by intemalizing ESD as a “hidden curriculum" within all subject areas. Hence, all subject areas must seek to incorporate and mainstream the principles of sustainability within its content. Arts education, which has tried to accommodate the knowledge acquisition in schools until now, can contribute to expanding the sustainable thinking in the individual and community level and building a sustainable future by restoring its inherent principles. Implementing ESD is primarily to share the values and cooperate together. Also, it covers an effort to share the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to sustainable development, and to provide a new set of practical standards that arises in practicing such sustainability principles and values.

이 글에서는 “지속가능발전”의 원리와 가치가 환경사회·경제·정치·교육을 포함한 모든 학문영역으로 그 영향력을 확대해 가야 한다는 당위성을 주장하고자 한다. 이 글에서는 총체성 교육의 맥락에서 지속가능한 미래의 형성에 필요한 역량을 육성해야 하는 책무를 요청받고 있는 예술교육이 이러한 사회적 요청과 조응하여 보다 실천적으로 이에 기여할 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것이 그 교육의 정당성을 지속적으로 강화해 나가는 하나의 방안임을 파악하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 총체적이고 포괄적 학습으로서 개인과 사회의 성장과 발달을 추구해 온 예술교육이 내재적 원리 전환과 외재적 가치 확대를 통해 지속가능한 미래를 창조하는 데 기여할 수 있는지 살펴보았다. 그리고 실제 저 12차 유네스코 예술교육세계대회에서 채택된 “서울 어젠다: 예술교육 발전목표”가 지속가능발전의 가치를 내재화 하고 있음을 확인하였으며 이를 근거로 지속가능성 사고의 확장에 기여할 수 있는 예술 교육과정의 개선방향을 탐색해 보았다.
