This research aims at identifying the multicultural competency of art teachers and proposing the direction of art teacher education, based on the contextual understanding of multicultural education in Korean society. In order to conceptualize the role of art education in the rapid shift toward multicultural society, this study discusses about the responses and changes in terms of the education discourse and policy making. This study acknowledges the importance of art teachers' competency in enhancing and permeating multicultural art education in school settings. The concept of culturally relevant pedagogy has provided the framework for drawing the abilities and responsibilities of multicultural art teachers as well as the direction of multicultural art teacher development. In association with the Korean multicultural situations and multicultural art education theories, this study sheds light on the multicultural art teacher education as the pivotal factor of multicultural art education in Korea.

본 연구는 한국 사회의 다문화 상황의 특성을 살펴보고 다문화교육의 이론을 토대로 다문화 미술교육을 위한 교사의 역량을 파악하여， 교사교육의 방향을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 다문화 사회로의 전환 과정에서 우리나라의 교육적， 정책적 대응방식을 고찰하고 미술교육의 역할을 조명하였다.
다문화교육의 정착과 확산에 있어 이를 실천할 수 있는 미술교사의 역량이 핵심적인 요소로 작용함에 주목하여， 문화적으로 적절한 교육(culturally relevant pedagogy)의 개념을 중심으로 미술교사의 다문화적 역랑을 개발하기 위한 교사교육의 방향을 논의하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 다문화미술교육에 대한 담론을 확장하고 구체적인 실천 방향에 대한 관심을 이끌어내기 위하여 한국의 다문화교육과 다문화미술교육 간의 관계를 고찰하고 그 안에서 미술교사 교육에 대한 시사점을 도출하는데 중점을 두었다.
