Multicultural Art Education: Reflections on Travel, Authenticity, and Encountering the Other

This paper expands on traditional concepts of multi-cultural art education by shifting the position in which we engage our conversation from one that focuses on the Other to the space in-between the encounter. By changing the place from which the analysis takes place, multicultural art education becomes as much about the questioner as it is about the person or culture being studied. The author explores ideas of travel , authenticity, and encountering the Other in an effort to deepen ideas about our lives in a global context. Examples of each concept are discussed in an effort to demonstrate each idea The author concludes with a call to art educators to recognize their importance in our increasingly visual world
