The purpose of this study is to examine the current conditions on sex education in residential facilities for people with disabilities. Main topics in the survey are the rate of provision of sex education, the educational contents, and the problems as well as the teachers’ understanding of the issue.
Frequency and percentage are presented for each question item. To analyze the differences among the demographic variables (level of education, experience, age, type of disability, teacher in charge and etc.), χ² are conducted.
The results of this research are as below.
The most difficult issue in the reality of sex education was the low understanding and recognition level of residents. Development of various materials and programs were strongly required. Mostly the staffs in charge of sex education were experts or nurses. The appropriate period for sex education was mostly in the 1st-3rd grade in elementary schools. The teaching methods and contents of the sex education, and dealing with sexual conducts were regarded as priority for professional training.
