Although abundant research outcomes on the Korean democratization movement have been produced up to now, some skepticism is posed to the academic integrity. In order to neutralize this kind of criticism, this paper is purposed to define the scope of the Korean democratization movement. The scope tends to include the types of the activities which can be categorized into the movement as well as the starting and end points of the movement. This paper also deals with the state-society relationship model as a framework to explain the Korean democratization movement. Even though many research works have applied this framework to the Korean case, most of them have put their focus on the society side, not having paid any attention to the state role in the process of the democratization. The achievement of Korean democratization is based on the high level of the social mobilization and the people's resistance spirit which has been inherited as historical legacy. In addition to this social capability, the state's softeningness especially in the 80's contributed to the democratization and it deserves a considerable amount of academic attention. This point shows the valuable difference of this paper from other works.

한국의 민주화와 민주화운동에 대한 연구 결과는 비교적 풍부한 편이다. 그러나 그러한 연구의 상당수가 운동 당사자들 내지 진보적 성향의 학자들에 의해 주도되었기 때문에 중립성이 결여될 수 있다는 우려가 제기되어 왔다. 이와 함께 민주화운동과 관련된 연구들은 민주화운동의 명확한 정의 및 범주를 규정하지 않고 진행됨으로써 연구의 엄밀성이 떨어지는 문제점을 보이고 있다. 이 연구는 앞의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 연구대상으로써 한국 민주화운동의 범주를 규정하고자 한다. 이에는 민주화운동의 기산점 및 종결 시점을 포함시키며, 한국 민주화운동이 추구했던 민주주의의 수준을 살펴본다. 이와 함께 이 논문은 민주화운동의 분석틀로 활용되는 국가-사회관계론적 접근방식에서 국가의 역할이 민주화에 미친 영향을 고찰하고자 한다. 그동안 한국 민주화와 관련하여 사회의 역할에 대한 심도 있는 분석은 충분하다고 판단된다. 그러나 지금까지 국가의 연성화가 민주화 및 민주주의 공고화의 연착륙에 미친 영향에 대해서는 학자들이 관심을 보이지 않았다는 점에서 이 연구는 중요한 의미를 가진다고 하겠다.
