Even though the crime rate of burglary has recently increased and the arrest rate is relatively lower than that of other crimes, the seriousness of the crime has been underestimated. The present study focused on situational factors in selecting a target of burglary and analyzed crime-scene behaviors of offenders. In order to differentiate crime-scene behaviors of burglary, the offender's M/O such as planning of the crime, selecting the target, and breaking into the selected spot in a total of 79 burglary cases were examined. As a result, we found that criminals primarily selected the target where there were few people around, no visible guards, no security alarm or CCTV, and dark places with no police appearance. We also found that most of the offenders were opportunists who selected and invaded these places through an open door or window. Based on the current results, we conclude that burglary offenders are mostly influenced by various situational factors surrounding the crime spot in their decision-making processes. We suggest effective measures of burglary prevention such as situational crime prevention techniques concerning selection of the target.

절도 범죄는 다른 범죄에 비해 최근 발생 건수가 급속도로 증가해 온 반면 여타 범죄에 비해 검거율이 상대적으로 낮음에도 불구하고 그간 그 심각성이 경시되어 왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 절도 범죄 중에서도 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 침입 절도에 초점을 맞추어, 범행 당시 범죄자의 행동 수법 분석을 통해 침입 절도 범죄자의 범행 대상 선정 요인을 분석하고, 이를 통해 효과적인 범죄 예방 대책을 강구하고자 하였다. 국내에서 발생한 침입 절도 범죄 총 79건을 대상으로 하여, 범행 전 사전 계획과 범행 장소 선정, 침입 수법 등을 통해 범죄자의 범행 수법을 분석한 결과, 조명이 어둡고 인적이 드물며 경비원이나 경보 장치, CCTV가 존재하지 않고 순찰이 흔치 않은 장소를 선택하여 열려 있는 문이나 창문을 통해 침입하여 범죄를 저지르는 기회주의적 범죄자들이 침입 절도 범죄의 대다수를 차지하는 것으로 드러났다. 침입 절도 범죄자들이 범행을 결심하고 실행으로 옮기는 데에 있어 범행 장소와 관련한 다양한 상황적 요인에 의해 영향을 받게 된다는 점을 드러낸 본 연구 결과에 비추어, 상황적 범죄 예방 기법 등 범행 장소와 관련된 범죄 억제 요인에 대한 고려를 통해 침입 절도 범죄를 예방하는 방안에 대해 논의하였다.
