Body painting is something to be imaged and reconstructed, using every tool and material to enable human bodies toexpress visually. Generally as it is painted on human bodies dimensionally unlike plane pictures drawn on a sheet of drawing paper, body painting can be
defined as a work that its utmost beauty is designed and expressed and revitalized out of a mere static art work, after understanding of body lines, shapes, skeletal structures, characteristics of the skin on a regular basis.
Today's body painting shows that the artists' symbolic concepts are concretely expressed on
human bodies through creative formations and contents, and that there are various expressions of liberal and subjective personalities and their unlimitedness, staying away from a former traditional fixed idea of beauty. With one of these characteristics, we can explain an idea of grotesque.
Grotesque, which can be represented as disharmony, tragedy or comedy, extreme, exaggeration, and abnormality, was a western art style that dates back to the early Christian age of the Roman culture. It was a mode intricate with human, animal, and botanical factors complexly and elaborately. It has changed its features constantly from a notion about weird
ornaments in the early 16th century to the tendency toward psychological disharmony and
abnormal metamorphosis in modern times. Also, it can be said that Grotesque means not
only weirdness and awfulness, but also a beauty a lot of meanings can be applied to.
We will be able to understand the characteristics and history of Grotesque, and we will make clear the variety of the body painting and its artistic development process based on Grotesque Expressionism in the contemporary body painting through this study of body painting. In addition, we will analyze various features of the body painting, escaping from its former traditional notion of beauty and expressing human's inner world with cultural developments in this study.
