The original Christian did not see Jesus as an historical man. They viewed Jesus as the mythical hero of a symbolic teaching story, which represents the spiritual journey leading to the experience of awakening they called 'gnosis', or 'knowing'. Such teachings of awakening are not exclusively Christian. Throughout history man of all faiths have woken up to oneness and love. I use the broad term 'Gnostic' meaning 'knower' to refer to all such individuals because, although they express their insights in the various languages of their diverse cultures, they all talk about the experience of awakening or gnosis.
Gnoticism is sometimes called 'the perennial philosophy' because it has been found in all cultures and all times. It is not that Gnotics all say exactly the same thing. they do not. It is rather that their teachings like fingers pointing from different perspectives to the samr experience of gnosis. Unfortunetly, most people focus on the fingers and missed point. This is Literalism. 'Literalists' take the Jesus story as a literal account of historical events. Literalist religions are club for people who want to worshipthe finger of their founder as one true finger, but who have no understanding of experience of awakening towards which it points.

영지주의는 현대에 와서 다시 살아나고 있는 서양의 고대종교다. 1945년도에 발견된 영지주의 문헌은 고대 종교사 연구, 특히 초기 기독교 연구에 획기적인 전환점을 가져 왔다. 이전에도 영지주의에 관한 언급이 없었던 것은 아니지만, 알려진 내용 대부분이 2세기에 영지주의를 탄압하고 말살시켰던 교부들에 의해 언급된 것이었고, 영지주의 문헌은 없었다. 이에 근거한 많은 주장 중에 특히 새로운 것은 초기 기독교의 모습이 동양의 종교와 큰 차이가 없다는 것이다. 본 논문은 이 유사성을 영지주의에 나타나는 궁극적 실재의 기원과 그 특성을 살펴보고, 동양의 궁극적 실재와 어떤 유사성이 있는지를 밝혀다.
기원 문제는 아직 정확한 것은 아니지만 고대 그리스 철학 연구자인 콘포드의 주장과 라다크리슈난의 주장을 비교해 보고, 거기서 나타나는 영지주의의 궁극적 실재가 어떻게 규정되었는지를 설명하였다, 이러한 규정에 근거해 영지주의 궁극적 실재가 문자주의자들이 주장하는 신과는 판이하게 다른 성격을 가졌으며, 오히려 동양의 궁극적 실재와 같음을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 구원의 의미도 영지주의자들은 오히려 동양 종교에서 주장되는 내용과 일치한다는 것을 밝혔다.
