The film, Mother has its unique view on the meaning of Motherhood. On the surface it seems, this movie is only focusing on representing the Myths of Motherhood exaggerating women's duty and sacrifice as a mother in caring about a family, especially on children. As some critics say Myths about a Good, Great Mother or a Bad Mother as a Woman Monster were invented by the needs for the patriarchal system of the past age but even now these Myths are being reinvented in our own culture with various faces. Mother, the heroin of Mother is representing this very image of mother who is great but dangerous in doing her role of mother with monstrous power devouring everything on the way of it. For the first place she has the image of Vagina Dentate in Ancient Myths and in the castration complex in men, who is believed to have the teeth to take off the penis. Secondly, with these fearful monster images, she also has the image of Good, Great and Sacred Mother sacrificing herself in doing all the hard things to save her son. As the common stories in films or soap operas on Good Mother in these days, she also easily gets much help from the powerful male figures in achieving her goal of realizing the myth of Sacred, Good Mother. However, its unique view of Mother on Motherhood is not made from these images successfully created in this work. In the technique of over-rapping the first scene of dancing mother to the last scene of dancing crowd of old women, this movie completes a kind of frame structure. Consequently it is possible to think that all the things in the movie have occurred in this frame, namely in the memory of Mother, the heroin of her story. On her witch like curious and sorrowful dance Mother expresses all her suffering in the body language, cause it is too complicated and dangerous to be spoken in words. In Jung's theory of psychology the state of suffering in mind is the first step toward Individuation in which a person lives his or her life as a whole being free from every demand and order such as every convention in religion, cultural system, tradition and politics. At this very point, the unique view of this movie reveals it self. In her dance Mother shows much complicated emotions of remorse, regret, guilty feeling and helplessness. In this suffering of self-recognizing moment about what she has done, she seems to begin the first step toward the possibility of Individuation for her self and for the greater change of this world.

봉준호의 <마더>는 모성에 관한 특별한 시각을 지니고 있는 영화이다. 영화에서 표면적으 로 제시되는 모성의 특성은 괴기함이다. 기피하고 부정되어야만 하는 이 같은 모성에 대한 개 념은 여성주의 비평가들이 주장하듯 가부장제도 내에서 기존 체제를 유지하기 위한 하나의 전략이라 할 수 있다. 프로이드나 라캉의 정신분석이론은 모성에 대한 가부장적 해석에 대한 이론의 틀을 제공하는 것으로 비난의 대상이 되기도 하지만 모성과 연관된 기존 문화의 다양 한 현상들을 이해하기 위한 유용한 도구가 되기도 한다. 다음으로 제시되는 모성의 특성은 강 함과 신성함에 대한 것으로 이 역시 가부장제의 유지를 위한 욕구가 숨어있는 만들어진 신화 일 뿐이다. <마더>에서 주인공 마더는 이 같은 두 가지 모성의 모습을 충실히 재현하는 인물로 묘사 된다. 그러나 이 영화의 특별함은 다루고 있는 사건의 의외성이나 모성의 괴기하고 충격적인 모습을 통해 드러나는 것은 아니다. 영화는 첫 시퀀스와 마지막 시퀀스가 오버랩 되는 장치를 통해 영화 속의 사건이 영화 속의 영화 라 할 수 있는 마더의 의식 속에서 재현되며 반추되는 것이라는 해석을 가능케 한다. 그리고 사건에 대한 마더의 회상과 의식은 어색하기 짝이 없는 그녀의 춤을 통해 표현되는데, 슬픔, 괴로움, 고통, 두려움, 회한, 후회와 같이 ‘말로는 표현 될 수 없는 힘들고 위험한 말’들이 소위 ‘아줌마 춤’이라는 몸 언어를 통해 발현된다. 영화의 특별 한 시선은 바로 이곳에서 제시 된다. 모성을 주제로 한 대부분의 영화들은 헌신적이고 신성한 모성의 희생이나, 자기희생의 과정에서 나타나는 모성의 두렵고 괴기한 모습만을 강조한다. 따라서 모성에 대한 가부장적인 해석만을 답습하는 한계를 드러낼 뿐이다. 그러나 <마더>에 서는 마더가 지닌 내면의 고통과 이를 통한 자기 성찰의 가능성 즉 ‘개성화(individuation)’ 의 가능성을 그녀의 어색하지만 진솔하고 고통스러운 춤사위를 통해 열어둔다. 융의 심리학에서 말하는 개성화는, 한 개인이 외부로부터의 모든 요구나 명령에 의해 지배 당하거나 영향 받지 않고 오로지 자신만의 선택으로 삶의 방식을 결정하는 ‘온전한 개인’이 되어가는 과정이다. 개성화의 과정은 그러므로 외부로부터 오는 힘과 자신과의 관계에 대한 명확한 인식과 자기 성찰을 통해 시작된다. 그리고 고통은 이 과정에서 피할 수 없는 것이다. 마지막 시퀀스에서, 관광버스에 타고 있는 아줌마들의 ‘관광버스 아줌마 춤’이 첫 시퀀스인 마더의 춤과 오버랩 되면서 마더의 춤은 그 의미가 사회적으로 확산된다. 영화는 모성을 향한 과장된 신화와 그 환상이 빚어내는 사회적인 비극에 대해 , 그리고 비극의 주인공인 마더들이 겪고 있는 고통의 과정에 대해 말하고 있는 것이다. 흐릿한 윤곽만을 드러낸 채 떠도는 유령 들의 그림자 같은 마더들이 깊은 한과 고통의 춤을 이어가고 있는 장면을 배경으로 앤딩 크래 딧을 올리며, 영화는 다음과 같이 관객에게 묻고 있는 것이라 하겠다. “이들이 지금 견뎌내고 있는 고통의 크기가 결국은 현실을 변화시킬 수 있는 가능성은 아 닐까?” 영화가 지닌 모성에 대한 특별한 시선은 바로 이 같은 질문 속에 담겨있다고 생각된다.
