This manuscript is an argument examining the inner motive of “GaeByeok” to maintain realistic discourse such as social enlightenment, mass readers insurance, public opinion collection and current events trend report in the censorship system of cultural politics and extend its authority. The cultural politics of 1920's allows freedom of speech to attempt conciliation and division. Censorship was the most emphasized plan of such colonial policy. Censorship is substantially an oppression that is preceded by ideology. However, oppression is followed by resistance. “GaeByeok” also prepares its own self-relief plan under such oppression of censorship. ｢Basic Investigation of Chosun Culture｣ of “GaeByeok” which continued from 1923 to 1925 was a strategic writing produced in the mechanism of censorship and anti-censorship within “GaeByeok”. Also, “GaeByeok” presented image symbol of the national state through such writing, and extended anti-imperialistic discourse resisting to imperialistic discourse. This also provided the foundation of critical understanding about the reality aimed by socialistic literature, making it the base for socialistic discourse to extend within “GaeByeok”.

본고의 목표는 ｢개벽｣지에 실린 ｢조선문화의 기본조사｣를 대상으로 사실적이고 지식체계 적인 조사를 통한 국토의 표상 방법과 그 속에 담겨 있는 글쓰기의 전략적 의도를 포착해 내 는 것이다. 이 ｢조선문화의 기본조사｣에는 ｢개벽｣내에 막 일어나기 시작하였던 사회주의 문학의 영향 으로 조선의 현실에 보다 정확한 이해를 도모하고자 하는 의도가 반영되었다. 외향적으로는 사실에 대한 조사 보고라는 형식을 취함으로써 검열의 시선에서 자유로울 수 있었고, 내적으 로는 그러한 사실을 토대로 조선인에게 조선심이라는 민족담론을 연출케 하는 전략을 담지할 수 있었다. 일제의 식민담론의 전개 방법을 전략적으로 전유함으로써 그것을 풍자하여 반-제 국주의 담론을 구성해 낼 수 있었던 것이다. 이것은 지역-조선-제국의 메커니즘이 아니라 지 역-식민지 조선- 민족국가의 내셔널리즘 표상해 내고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한, 이러 한 조선의 현실에 대한 제반 조사를 통해 사회주의 문학이 지향하는 현실에 대한 비판적 이해 를 성취할 수 있었고, 이러한 성취는 이후 󰡔개벽󰡕내에 사회주의 담론이 확장될 수 있는 밑바 탕이 되었다. 이처럼 ｢조선문화의 기본조사｣는 식민지 시기 검열의 강력한 제제 속에서 반-검열적 메커 니즘의 작동으로 이뤄낸 글쓰기의 전략적 특징을 보여주는 것임과 동시에 그 시대의 담론적 전개를 선취하는 다양한 글쓰기의 양식적 특징을 보여주고 있다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
