This study focuses on the discourse on Christianity and modern political aspects centered on the conversion process of Christianity for Kuk-seon Ahn, an intellectual from Enlightenment Period who has been enthused for the acceptance of Westernized modernity and materialized political ideologies based on it. Kuk-seon Ahn portrayed Christianity as the representation of Westernized modernity and intensively covered it in his representative novel Keumsuheoilog. Thus the discussion is on how the author’s perception of Christianity has been shaped and how the inherent modern political nature has combined with Christian world view in this novel. Until now, the study of Kuk-seon Ahn’s Keumsuheoilog as Christian literature has been limited to the context of the surface content work and was preoccupied with concluding it as being correlated to Christian perception. The fact that Kuk-seon Ahn, as the intellectual in Enlightenment Period, has chosen Western political thoughts as the intellectual basis for the systemization of ideological foundation and the fact that his Christian world view has acted as the foundation for modern awareness cannot be overlooked. In this light, his path to the acceptance of Christianity has to be examined more extensively. This study is designed to contemplate on Kuk-seon Ahn’s conversion to Christianity and based on this, to examine how his Christian thoughts have formed the awareness for enlightenment and affected the creative process of the work for the purpose of shedding light on the significance of Keumsuheoilog as a Christian novel.

본 연구는 서구적 근대성을 수용하고 그것에 바탕을 둔 정치사상을 구현하는 데 그 누구보 다 적극적이었던 개화기 지식인 안국선의 기독교 수용 과정을 중심으로 기독교 담론과 근대 적 정치성의 양상에 대해 주목하고자 한다. 안국선이 서구적 근대성의 표상으로 수용한 기독 교는 그의 대표 소설인 <금수회의록>에 집약적으로 나타나 있다. 따라서 이 소설에 작가의 기독교 인식이 어떻게 형상화되었으며, 나아가 그 속에 내재한 근대적 정치성이 기독교적 세 계관과 어떤 방식으로 결합되고 있는지에 대해 논의를 집중했다. 지금까지 안국선의 <금수회의록>에 대한 기독교 문학으로서의 연구는 작품 자체에 표면 화된 문맥에 의거하여 기독교 인식과의 상관성을 결론짓는 데 급급했던 한계를 안고 있다. 안 국선이 개화기 지식인으로서의 사상적 틀을 체계화하는 데에는 서양 정치사상을 학문적 배경 으로 삼았다는 점과 기독교적 세계관이 근대의식의 밑거름으로 상호작용했다는 점을 간과해 서는 안 된다. 때문에 이러한 전제 하에서 그의 기독교 수용 과정을 좀 더 면밀히 고찰할 필요 가 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 안국선의 기독교로의 개종 과정을 사적으로 고찰하는 작업을 선행했다. 그리고 이를 토대로 기독교 사상이 그의 개화의식 형성 및 소설의 창작에 어떤 식 으로 관여하고 있는가를 분석함으로써 <금수회의록>에 대한 기독교 소설로서의 의미를 새롭 게 조명하고자 했다.
