In this paper, we speculate on the meaning of the agora from the view of Bakhktin and Ranciére. In the agora as a space of carnival, languages in various classes and groups are freely mixed. In the space, social hierarchy breaks down, and democratic and polyphonic language is dominant. Therefore, the agora is not an empty space in our reality; rather it’s the space in which politics deeply intervene into reality. The power attempts to evacuate the agora. In the agora, which is forcibly created by the power, the empirical world of individuals is eliminated. People who live in the modern world cannot identify themselves from the agora. Therefore, the experience in the agora has double meaning. The power attempts to evacuate the agora in order to cause a fear experience, like “agoraphobia,” in people. On the other hand, people try to open carnivals in the agora to draw new political boundaries. The agora is a space in which many desires exist, along with our memory. The agora should be thought of as a continuing space to find a complete meaningful structure.

이 논문에서는 바흐친과 랑시에르의 관점에서 광장의 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 카니발의 공간으로서 광장은 여러 계층과 집단의 언어가 자유롭게 뒤섞인다. 사 회적 위계가 전복되는 민주적이고 다성적인 언어가 지배하는 공간이다. 그렇기에 광장은 우리 현실에서 비어있는 여백의 공간이 아니라, 현실 깊숙이 개입하고자 하는 정치의 공간이다. 권력은 광장을 비우려 한다. 권력에 의해 강제로 만들어진 광장에서 개인의 경험세계는 소거된다. 그런 광장을 바라보는 현대인은 광장을 통해 자신을 확인할 수 없다. 그렇기에 광장의 경험은 이중적이다. 권력이 행사하 는 정치적 행위는 ‘아고라포비아’를 경험하게 할 정도로 광장을 텅 비우려 한다. 반면에, 다중은 광장에서 카니발을 열어 새로운 정치 지형을 그리려 한다. 광장은 아직도 우리가 채워야 할 욕망과 기억이 많은 공간이다. 완성된 의미구조를 찾아 가는 진행형의 공간으로 광장은 기억되어야 한다.
