This study examined the life and thoughts of Hamwol Haewon(涵月 海源) in the latter half of Chosun with a special focus on his viewpoint of Seon in Iseongyeongwirok(󰡔二禪涇渭錄󰡕) and found that his life and thoughts evolved around Seon with an emphasis on Gyohak as the head of the 11th Prime Buddhist Temple recorded in Daedunsaji(󰡔大芚寺志󰡕).
He acknowledged the annotations of Jongmil(宗密) in the understanding of Seon based on Gyohak and practiced the Yeombulseon(念佛禪) of Yushimjeongto(唯心淨土) and Jaseongmita(自性彌陀) along with Ganhwaseon(看話禪)-based practice.
Despite the difficult temple economy due to the suppression policy, he managed to constantly publish scriptures at a couple of temples including Seokwangsa according to all sorts of books in Cheongyeongjip(󰡔天鏡集󰡕), which also tell that all kinds of the lecturing including Avatamsaka lecturing were prevalent. Iseongyeongwirok also reveals that he maintained two kinds of Seon of 'Yeoraeseon(如來禪) and Josaseon(祖師禪)' and 'Uiriseon(義理禪) and Gyeokoiseon(格外禪)' by Neungseol(能說) and Soseol(所說). His view of two kinds of Seon was connected to Ganhwagyeoluiron(󰡔看話決議論󰡕) by Jinul(知訥). In addition, his view of Seon related to the Seon practice methods was in line with three kinds of
Seon of Baekpa(白坡) and two kinds of Seon of Choui(草衣) later. An examination of Hamwol's life, thoughts and view of Seon provides great materials to understand the flow in the history of Buddhist thoughts especially Seon thoughts in the latter half of Chosun and further gives a good example to show that Buddhist monks engaged in ongoing purification operations to promote Buddhism under the Confuciation reverence and Buddhism suppression policy.

본 논문은 조선후기 涵月 海源의 생애와 사상을 조명하면서 특히 <二禪涇渭錄>에 나타난 禪觀을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과 涵月은 󰡔大芚寺志󰡕에 第 11대 宗師로 기록되어 있는 禪僧답게 禪을 중심으로 하면서도 敎學을 중시하는 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 교학에 바탕을 둔 禪의 이해에 있어서는 圭峯宗密의 註釋을 대부분 인정하고 있었으며 看話禪위주의 수행과 더불어 唯心淨土· 自性彌陀의 念佛禪도 병행하고 있었다. 󰡔天鏡集󰡕에 실린 각종 序는 억압받던 어려운 사원 경제에도 불구하고 釋王寺 등 몇 몇 사찰을 중심으로 꾸준히 經典類가 출판되었으며 華嚴講會 등 각종 강회가 성행되고 있었음을 보여준다. 한편 涵月은 <二禪涇渭錄>에서 能說과 所說에 의한 如來禪과 祖師禪, 義理禪과 格外禪의 二種禪으로 당시의 선수행과 관련된 여러 禪論에 대한 자신의 禪觀을 밝히고 있다. 이러한 二種禪觀은 멀리 知訥의 󰡔看話決議論󰡕과 그 맥을 같이 하며 이후 전개된 白坡의 三種禪과 草衣의 二種禪과도 무관하지 않음을 밝혔다. 涵月의 생애와 思想, 禪觀에 대한 조명은 禪敎兼修의 朝鮮後期 佛敎思想史, 특히 禪思想史의 흐름을 파악하는데 좋은 자료가 되며 崇儒抑佛 下에서 護佛을 위한 승려들의 꾸준한 淨化작업이 실시되고 있었음도 아울러 보여주는 좋
은 예라 할 것이다.
