This paper examines the expressive feature of the material which is reflected in the surface design of HdM’s architecture. The surface, along with technical development and usage of different materials, is an important subject in modern architecture. Manifesting in the fact that the sensuous recognition of the surface results from the outward appearance of the material, the emphasis on the materiality of the surface signifies the importance of the material in architecture. The architectural works of HdM show the expressive possibility of the material through the various architectural forms that result from both the material and technology. The material, which is the object of sensuous recognition of the surface in HdM’s architecture, is evaluated as the basal element for the understanding of HdM’s architecture. To better understand the architecture of HdM, this paper examines the thoughts on the material in the architectural thinking of HdM, as well as the optical features of the material in the surface designs of HdM’s architecture. In conclusion, this paper is an attempt to interpret HdM’s thoughts on architectural design intended through their experimental usage of the material.

본 논문의 목적은 HdM 건축외피의 디자인에서 드러나는 재료의 표현적 특징을 고찰하고자 한다. 현대 건축에서 건축외피는 기술의 발달 및 다양한 재료의 사용과 더불어 중요한 주제로 등장하고 있다. 외피의 감각적 인식은 외부로부터 받아들여지는 재료에 의한 것으로 외피의 물성이 강조된다는 것은 건축 표면에 드러나는 재료의 중요성이 부각되는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. Herzog & de Meuron(이하 HdM)의 작품은 기술과 재료에 의한 다양한 건축적 형태를 통해 건축재료가 가지는 표현적 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 그들의 건축작품에서 감각적인 대상으로 드러나는 건축재료는 그들의 건축을 이해하기 위한 기본 조건으로 평가할 수 있다. 이를 위해 HdM의 건축적 사고에 보이는 재료에 대한 생각을 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 HdM의 건축외면에서 드러난 시각적 특성을 재료의 사용과 가공적인 측면에서 고찰한다. 이것은 재료에 대한 실험적 시도를 통해 HdM이 의도하는 건축 디자인에 대한 그들의 사고를 추적하고자 하는 시도이다.
