Church Architecture should express the essence of Christian and believer's piety through form and, also, express spiritual meaning and symbol through space. Also, Church Architecture is a medium in the form of architecture which embodies the process of self-realization through symbols based on religious experiences in immanence of every human. A human makes transformed symbols of actual existence giving their own important meaning to it through symbolic behaviors. Recently, with newly growing understanding of missionary roles of symbols in Korean Protestantism, more and more architects consider using symbols to express the essence of church and characteristics. It is also because not only architects but also religious workers get interested in expressive characters of symbols when they have a plan building Church Architecture. In general, when architects plan Church Architecture, they are offered guidelines, ideology and direction for architectural design by a person in charge. They decide on the direction of architecture plan after discussions regarding a design concept reflecting religious worker's pastoral philosophy. This paper gets a purpose of giving the basic information of expressive haracters of Symbols to plan of modern church architecture in Exterior esign Elements of Church Architecture and the research was done especially in eligious workers.

교회건축은 형태를 통해 기독교의 본질과 그 신자들의 신앙심을 표현하고, 공간을 통해 예배의 종교적 의미와 상징을 나타내어야 한다. 그리고 교회건축이라는 것은 모든 인간들에게 내재되어 있는 종교적 체험을 근원으로 하여 인간의 자각 또는 자아 원형의 이해로부터 자아를 실현하는 과정을 상징을 통하여 사상적 배경, 시대의 전반적인 양상과 더불어 예술의 한 분야인 건축이라는 매개체로 구현되는 것이다. 인간은 상징행위를 통하여 사물이나 어떤 형태에 자기 나름대로의 중대한 의미를 부여함으로써 실재를 변형된 상징으로 만들어낸다. 근래 들어 한국 교회 건축물에서도 선교적 상징적 역할에 대하여 새롭게 인식하기 시작하면서 이러한 교회의 본질과 특성을 표현하기 위해 상징을 사용하는 경향이 점점 증가 하고 있다. 이는 교회건축 계획 시 건축가 집단 뿐만 아니라 교역자 집단을 중심으로 상징성 표현 특성에 관하여 깊은 관심을 보이고 있기 때문이라 사료된다. 일반적으로 건축가는 교회건축 계획 시 교회건축 담당자로부터 설계를 위한 필요 지침, 설계이념 및 방향에 관한 정보를 제공받게 되며, 교역자의 목회철학이 반영된 설계개념을 가지고 협의를 통하여, 건축설계 방향을 결정하게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이러한 교회건축 계획의 특성상 교역자 집단을 대상으로 교회건축 외부공간에 대한 의장적 상징성 표현 특성에 관하여 고찰해 봄으로서 현대 교회건축 계획을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 한다.
