The housing type in Korea has been changing during the last several decades. Starting from a traditional Korean housing called 'Hanok' to westernized individual houses, the apartment housing type was first introduced during the industrialization process in the 1970s, then the apartment housing became a prototype housing in Korea through the five million housing supply during the 1980s and the two million housing supply during the 1990s by the Government policies. As the recent housing market has become competitive, the construction companies as the major home builders or house suppliers were required to improve the satisfaction of occupants in apartment housing and they spent tremendous efforts in developing better unit plans of apartment housing to fulfill the changing life styles of the occupants. However, the development of unit plan was primarily focused on the needs of building professionals and housewives, not the residential needs of the children who nowadays have their own strong opinions. Thus, it has become essential to study on unit space planning of apartment housing based on the residential needs of children, and the recent development of 3-bay unit plan needs to be examined compared to the existing 2-bay unit plan of standard type apartment housing whether it satisfies the residential needs of not only the parents but the children in a family.

아파트 단위 주거내의 각 공간의 배치와 각 실 간의 관계에 대한 연구이다. 국민주택규모인 전용면적 85㎡(25.7평) 규모의 아파트는 조망권과 자연채광을 좋게 하기 위한 아파트 전면 베란다에 접한 방과 거실의 개수를 뜻하는 베이(bay)를 둘로 나누어 설계한 2베이 단위주거평면이 초기에는 대부분이었으나 3베이, 3.5베이, 4베이형까지 지속적인 단위주거 평면의 개발이 이루어지고 있으며 베이수가 많은 평면형이 더 선호되고 있는 것이 현실이다. 이는 새로운 단위주거 평면의 개발은 각 건설사의 전문가들과 주부들의 참여로 활발하게 이루어져 왔고 최근의 경향인 3베이 국민주택규모 아파트 단위주거 평면이 기존의 2베이 평면과 비교하여 현재의 주 소비계층인 부모세대에게 더 만족스러운 것으로 분석되었기 때문이다. 그러므로 부모세대뿐만 아니라 풍요로운 시대에 태어나 물질적인 풍요를 누리며 아파트를 주거 공간으로 생활하고 있는 자녀 세대에서도 그들이 공간을 사용하기에 각 실과 전체공간의 크기 면에서, 각 실들의 공간 배치 면에서 만족스러운지에 대한 조사와 연구가 필요하다.
