This research tries to prove characteristics of the contemporary Korean housing complexes based on the public–private spatial relationships of postmodern urbanism. The arguments will begin with debate on public–private spaces. Then it will continue on with public–private spatial types and characteristics, which supports the arguments on spatial relationships of urban housing complexes. Humans developed a collection of individual living quarters to fulfill one of the basic desires, a sense of belonging, within controlled society environment. The process of formation of housing complex brought the emergence of an unprecedented public space outside of each living unit. Historically numerous adjustments were made overtime to meet the changes of urban environments. In the mist of transformation, urbanism entered the living quarter and initiated modifications not only in the unit itself but also in housing complexes. The spatial relationship has been renovated over progress of time. Through the analysis of the characteristics of the contemporary Korean housing complexes based on the public-private spatial relationship of postmodern urbanism proves that the western notion of postmodern public-private spatial phenomenological distinction is going through an unique development in Korea.

오늘날의 공동주거는 포스트모던시대의 도시건축환경 속으로 재편되어가고 있다. 이러한 재편 과정은 한국의 1990년대 이후 경제적 차별화의 심화에 따른 거주자들의 각 계층에 따른 차별화된 공동체 개념과 개인주의의 심화에 기인한다. 이러한 과정에서 공동주거공간의 계획 또한 근대와는 다른 공적·사적 공간관계를 요구하고 있다. 특히 이러한 요구가 공간적으로 극대화 되어 나타나는 곳이 대단지화된 공동주거이다. 오늘날에 이르러서는 이러한 근대의 공동주거 개념으로는 현대 거주자들의 달라진 공적·사적 공간관계의 요구에 부응하기에 힘들게 되었으며 근대의 공동주거에서 공적 공간과 사적 공간의 관계설정에서 오랫동안 교본처럼 참고로 해왔던 오스카 뉴만(Oscar Newman)의 공적 공간, 준-공적 공간, 준-사적 공간, 사적 공간의 단계적 위계에 따른 공간계획은 더 이상 오늘날의 공동주거 계획에 적절히 응용되기가 힘들게 되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 포스트모던시대의 대단지화된 공동주거공간에서 달라진 공적·사적 공간관계를 배경으로 한다. 이러한 배경에서 공동주거의 공적·사적 공간구성관계의 특징에 관한 규명은 공적 공간과 사적 공간의 각각의 공간적 특징과 그 위계적 단계에 따른 깊이의 이해만으로는 대단지화된 공동주거의 공적·사적 공간구성관계의 특징을 종합적으로 규명하기에 불가능하다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 대단지화된 공동주거의 공적·사적 공간관계의 특징을 규명하는 데에 있어서 이들 공간관계에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요소의 고려와 이러한 요소들의 등장배경과 이들의 관계를 체계화 하는 과정과 그 관계의 규명에 있다.
