This article discusses Koreans in Japan who are usually called as “Zainichi” from the perspective of multiculturalism. The history of the Zainichi Korean community dates back to the Japanese colonial occupation in 1910. During the past 100 years the Zainichi Korean community experienced many changes while undergoing various hardships and complications. These changes originated within the Zainichi Korean community as generations have passed and the
relationship between the community and the motherland has changed. The Zainichi Korean community, however, was most deeply affected by the surrounding Japanese society. Although Japanese society is often viewed as a very closed one, Japan is experiencing the phenomenon
of multiculturalism influenced by globalization. The Zainichi Korean community is directly and indirectly subject to the influence of these changes. For these reasons, we must reconsider the relationship between the Zainichi Korean community and the Japanese society that is undergoing multicultural changes. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the history of
the Zainichi Korean community and its present and future in relation to the rapidly changing multicultural situation in Japan. Particularly focusing on the contrast between the two concepts of “coexistence” and “compatriotism,” this article analyzes how these two concepts come in and out of conflict in Japan.

본고는 ‘자이니치(在日)’라 불리는 재일코리언들을 ‘다문화주의(multiculturalism)’라고 하는 관점에서 재조명한 것이다. 재일코리언들의 역사는 일본의 식민지 지배가 시작된 1910년을 기점으로 하자면 어언 100년이 되었다. 이러한 재일코리언 커뮤니티는 민족차별 등 온갖 역경을 겪으면서도 그동안 많은 변화를 거듭해 왔다. 커뮤니티 내부적으로는 세대교체가 빠르게 진행되었으며, 정치적 이념을 달리하는 양대 민족단체인 재일본대한민국민단(민단)과 재일본조선인총연합회(총련)는 대립을 넘어 화해를 모색하는 움직임을 보이기도 했다. 한편, 이러한 재일코리언 커뮤니티의 변화는 무엇보다도 그들이 정착해 사는 일본이라는 사회의 변화에 많은 영향을 받았으며, 일본사회의 변화를 추동했던 담론의 핵심이 바로 다문화주의이다. 그러한 의미에서 일본사회의 다문화적 상황과 관련시켜 재일코리언을 새롭게 재인식하는 것은 매우 중요한 작업이며, 여기에 또한 본고의 목적이 있다. 특히, 본고에서는 일본사회가 다문화 사회 실현을 위해서 내세우는 ‘공생’이라는 논리와 재일코리언을 여전히 강하게 규정하는 ‘동포’라는 의식을 대비시켜, 두 개념이 서로 어떻게 충돌할 수 있는지, 혹은 상호 공존의 가능성은 없는지에 대해 고찰했다.
