Resembling God: Plato’s Legacy Transmitted to Stoic Ethics and Natural Philosophy －A Study Focused on Timaeus－ Lee, Chang-Uh (The Catholic Univ. of Korea) It has not been clear for a long time whether some Platonic elements are included in the ethical system of the early Stoic philosophers. However, according to Cicero’s Tusculanae Disputationes, Bk.5, the thesis of Stoic philosophy has clearly come from Platonic authority. This text presents the Stoic basic view that the order of the universe plays a role as a paradigm for the inner and psychic order of the human being, and happiness starts from a contemplation of the universe. To this view the early Stoic philosophers added an ideal of imitatio Dei and thereby tried to lay a natural philosophical-theological foundation for their ethics. Plato’s Timaeus, especially 90a-d, presents a cosmological ethical viewpoint too. According to this viewpoint, the human being should imitate the motion of the divine universe in order to reach the end of life and happiness. The divine Demiurge of the Timaeus symbolizes the cosmic intelligence(nous). And the cosmic intelligence reveals itself as immanent in this universe. In this sense this universe is “visible God”. The object of imitation by the human being is not world-transcendental. The ethical paradigm stands near the human being. This idea of the imitatio Dei in the Timaeus was accepted and partially transformed by the Stoics.

초기 스토아 철학자들의 윤리학 체계 안에 플라톤적 요소가 들어가 있는지의 여부는 오랫동안 분명하지 않은 문제였다. 하지만 키케로의 󰡔투스쿨룸 토론󰡕 제5권에 의하면 스토아 철학의 논제는 분명히 플라톤적 권위로부터 온 것이다. 󰡔투스쿨룸 토론󰡕 제5권에는 스토아의 근본 관점, 즉 우주의 질서는 인간의 내적, 심리적 질서를 위한 패러다임이며 행복은 우주 관조에서 출발한다는 관점이 드러나 있다. 스토아 철학자들은 이 관점에 신에 대한 모방이라는 이념을 가미함으로써, 그들의 윤리학을 자연철학적ㆍ자연신학적으로 정초한다. 플라톤의 󰡔티마이오스󰡕, 특히 90a-d에도 우주론적 윤리학의 시각이 들어 있다. 이에 따르면 인간은 삶의 목적과 행복에 이르기 위해 신적 우주의 운동을 모방해야 한다. 󰡔티마이오스󰡕에서 데미우르고스 신은 우주적 지성을 위한 상징이다. 그리고 우주적 지성은 이 우주 안에서 내재화되어 있다. 그런 점에서 이 우주는 “가시적인 신”이다. 인간의 모방의 대상은 세계 초월적이지 않다. 윤리적 패러다임은 인간과 가까이 있다. 󰡔티마이오스󰡕에서 나타나는 이러한 신 모방 관념을 스토아는 수용했고 적절히 변용했다.
