Traditional folk painting in today’s society are keeping the tradition according to changes of the times because they are reevaluated and newly attempted by many scholars. Today’s folk painting researchers often introduce books and exhibitions to the public by using folk tales. Drawing methods of folk paintings are different from shade and projection perspective of Western painting, linear perspective developed after the Western Renaissance, and a Samwon(three ways) method that is perspective of Oriental painting. In addition, folk paintings are various in terms of expression forms in harmony with metaphor and metonymy, a direct technique, exaggeration and omittance, and truth and imagination. Folk paintings were everywhere on the paper, wall, door, wardrobe, cabinet, doorframe, women’s coat string, skirt and flower shoes, and each of them have different symbolic meanings. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it aims to seek for the stage to use symbolic expressions of folk paintings practically by comparing and analyzing symbolism differently interpreted according to different objects of folk paintings, which reflect the spirit of the age yet have various expressions and objects, with illustration.

현대사회에서 전통민화는 시대의 변화에 따라서 명맥을 유지해오고 있다. 그것은 많은 학자들에 의해 민화가 재평가되고 새롭게 시도 되어 지고 있기 때문이다. 민화연구가들에 의해 민화를 활용하여 대중에게 소개되는 서적과 전시회 등을 현대사회에서 흔히들 볼 수 있다. 민화의 화법은 역원근법으로 서양화법의 명암(明暗)과 투시원근법(透視遠近法), 일점원근법과 동양화의 원근법인 삼원법과도 다르다. 또한 민화는 은유와 환유, 직설화법, 과장과 생략, 사실과 상상이 어우러진 민화의 표현 양식도 다양하다. 200년전 민화는 종이뿐만 아니라 벽, 문, 장롱, 반닫이, 문틀, 여인의 옷고름과 치마, 꽃신 등 어디에나 등장했다. 그리고 그것이 갖는 상징적 의미도 각각 다르다. 이처럼 시대정신을 반영하면서도 다양한 표현 체계와 그려지는 대상에 따라 달리 해석되는 상징성을 가지고 있다. 민화의 분류별 상징적 표현 기능과 일러스트레이션과의 기능을 비교분석을 통하여 민화의 상징성을 실용적으로 활용할 수 있는 단계를 모색하는데 의의를 들 수 있다.
