This is an era which reflects a desperate need for spirituality in the pulpit; the words of a preacher only fall upon deaf ears and ring like a hollow kettle when he does not personally know God and love Him because his eyes have not seen the beauty of God. Only a preacher with life? filled spirituality can preach life? giving sermons, and only a pastor who adorns the heart of God and dedicates himself to a life of servitude and love can bring forth refreshing springs upon a dray and parched land.
In this paper, researches provide discussion on the realistic and ever? relevant link between spirituality and effective preaching with an emphasis on the rhetorical and practical dimensions of spirituality in preaching. researches conclude the paper by listing four critical elements of spiritually empowered preaching which will hopefully provide guidance and reference for preachers today.
First, sermons must submit to the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit; the preacher may preach, but it is the Holy Spirit that brings about life? changing holiness in the hearts of the audience. Preachers who yield to the Holy Spirit when they stand upon the pulpit speak not according to their thoughts, but by the beckoning of the Holy Spirit. Second, sermons must be founded upon prayer. Prayer is to preaching what fire is to an altar of sacrifice; it is a critical element by which God establishes and builds the preacher and stirs the hearts of the congregation. Third, researches emphasize the fact that true spirituality encourages the preacher to preach to himself before he does to the audience. Only those who find their identity reflected in the Word and strive to conform to the image of Christ are able to approach the pulpit with humble confidence in the power of the Word of God. Finally, researches encourage the reader to delight in daily training to understand God and the Scriptures in its true and biblical context. Spirituality is the fruit of deeper relationship with God manifested through training and discipline in daily life.

어느 때보다 설교자의 영성이 절실한 시대가 되었다. 설교자가 하나님을 알고 사랑하는 거룩한 눈이 없다면 그의 메시지는 공허한 메아리로 들려질 것이다. 설교자의 영성이 살아야 설교가 살아날 수 있다. 설교자의 이미지가 점점 추락하고 있는 오늘날 하나님의 가슴을 품고 영혼을 사랑하는 목자만이 다시 이 땅에 부흥의 강물을 흘려보낼 수 있다. 논자는 본 글에서 영성과 설교자에 관하여 실제적인 측면에서 고찰했다. 먼저 오늘날 설교자에게 요청되는 영성의 시급함을 다루고 영성의 중요성을 수사학적 차원에서 고찰했다. 마지막으로 영성에 이끌리는 설교를 위해 네 가지 요소를 제시했다.
첫째, 성령에 이끌리는 설교에 관하여 강조했다. 사람이 강단에서 설교할지라도 거룩한 변화를 일으켜 내는 주체는 성령이다. 성령에 이끌리는 설교자는 자신의 생각을 설교를 통해 제시하지 않고 성령의 가르침에 귀를 기울인다. 둘째, 기도를 통해 나오는 설교를 강조했다. 설교에서 기도란 제단에 불을 내리는 통로와도 같다.
하나님께서 기도를 통해 설교자를 강하게 세우실 뿐 아니라 청중의 마음을 움직이기도 하신다.
셋째, 영성 있는 설교자는 다른 사람에게 설교하기 전에 먼저 자신에게 설교해야 할 것을 강조했다. 하나님의 말씀 앞에 자신을 발견하고 변화시키는 설교자라야 교인들을 변화시키는 하나님의 말씀에 대한 확신을 가지고 강단에 설 수 있다. 마지막으로 하나님을 바르게 알고 말씀을 깨닫기 위해 성실하게 훈련할 것을 강조했다. 영성이란 하나님과의 관계 속에서 깊어지는 동시에 자신을 철저하게 훈련하는 삶을 통해 생활 속에서 나타나야 한다.
