Many countries are nowadays facing challenges raised in multicultural societies. Those challenges are caused by the immigration of foreign workers according to the globalization of capital and labor. In this context, this paper aims at examining experiences and efforts to cope with the problems of the multi-clutural society in Germany. Germany has relatively long history of migration of foreign workers and experiences of political and social process of solving problems of the multi-clutural society. German policies for foreigners were mainly the temporary labor policy, which affected the integration policies negatively. Above all, the problems of the second and third generations led to the change of the integration politics into the concept of the parallel society in the positive sense. Korea society is also confronted by the challenges from the multi-cultural society. Some German experiences gives precious lessons for the Korean reaction to the challenges in the future. Concludingly, the success in the social integration largely depends on the degree of the recognition and acceptance of the foreign culture and foreigners, institutions and relevant policies of governments and cooperation among central and local governments and civil society. Moreover various effort by social organizations as well as by government should be linked systematically and comprehensively.

독일의 다문화사회 통합정책은 외국인의 증가와 이에 따른 다문화주의의 틀 속에서 사회적․정치적․경제적 갈등을 해소하려는 방안모색을 위해 좋은 사례를 제공한다고 할 수 있다. 이에 이 논문에서는 독일의 다문화사회 통합정책을 고찰하고 이를 타산지석의 입장에서 한국의 현실에 재조명하는데 목적이 있다. 다문화사회를 대비하는 정책이 보다 종합적이고 체계적으로 추진되기 위해서는 문화정책과 사회통합정책의 관계를 함께 고려하는 것이 필요하며 문화간 교류와 소통을 통하여 사회통합을 이끌어 내는 방향으로 추진되는 것이 바람직하다. 구체적으로는 첫째, 외국인 근로자의 인권향상에 관심을 기울여야 하며, 그에 대응하는 법적 제도마련이 이루어져야 한다. 둘째로, 결혼이민자 주요 송출국 재외공관에 여성․인권 담당관을 배치하여 여성결혼이민자의 실질적인 권익보호가 이루어지도록 해야 한다. 셋째로 이주민 대상 언어교육과 함께 각종 행정정보, 의료정보, 복지정보 등에 대한 통합적 통․번역 체계를 갖추고 이들이 쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 서비스를 확대할 필요가 있다. 넷째로 유치원에서 대학에 이르는 각급 교과과정 외에 다문화 시민교육을 강화시켜야 하며 이를 위한 교재 개발과 전문 인력 양성이 필요하다.
