The purpose of this study is to analyze and extract the characteristics of modernization of women's fashion in the 1900s, a turning point in modern women's fashion. Documentary research was used and the results of research were analyzed. Four different changes in appearance that led to modernization of women's fashion in the 1900s were extracted, and the characteristics of each change are as follows: First is a ‘radical change of silhouette’ related to freedom of the body. The silhouette of women's fashion radically changed from an ‘S’ line to a ‘T’ line in the 1900s, when women who had restricted their bodies with artificial support systems such as corsets took charge of their own bodies again. The second change is ‘generalization of alternative fashion’ which was influenced by cooperation between England and France. Opening of culture due to the ‘Entente Cordial’ between England and France made the advancement of British men's wear to France possible, and this solved the problem of the age of French fashion that ruled European and American women's wear markets‒practicality. Third is the role of department stores and fashion magazines as bridgeheads that spread new trends. Department stores sold copies of the works of couturiers, but they were the channels that spread new styles to the public, together with fashion magazines. The mail-order catalogs department stores published to secure customers were also an important tool that spread fashion. If the innovative styles of couturiers and alternative styles had not spread down to the public but had remained as exclusive property of the upper classes, the point of modernization of women's fashion would have been delayed. The last change is the active work of first generation French couturiers. Modernization of women's fashion is the result of continuous efforts made by couturiers to rule the fashion of the upper classes.
