Korea has maintained its traditional costume culture despite much contact with foreign culture. However, it is considered difficult for modern people who wear western costume as daily dress to wear hanbok now. Because of this situation, there is a higher chance people today will wear traditional clothes if they are designed a one-piece clothing rather than two-piece outfits. The baeja was used as a basis because it is a costume that is sleeveless or short-sleeved and it is easy to wear with any type of inner wear. The purpose of this study is to provide a design that adapts the baeja to create a modern look. The baeja has been worn since the three kingdom period and developed into many different types and shapes in the Joseon dynasty. Characteristics of the baeja that should be considered for modern design are fabric, parallel collars, side seam, length of the baeja, etc. Among the many types of Joseon baeja, this study chose the fur baeja, quilted baeja and padded baeja, which were used as warm-up wear. First, the baeja was reproduced to remain as similar as possible, and then a modern baeja was made by changing color and details such as by using wool, etc. Traditional costume is more than just clothes. It can stimulate interest in traditional culture and have an educational effect on the next generation.

한국 전통 복식은 오랜 역사 속에서 외래문화와의 접촉에도 불구하고 고유의 복식문화를 이어왔다. 서양복을 평상복으로 착용하는 현대인들에게 한복의 착용은 현실적으로 어려운 일이라 생각된다. 이러한 시점에서 조금이라도 한복을 착용할 수 있는 기회를 만들기 위해서는 한 벌로 구성된 옷보다는 단품형태의 디자인 개발이 효율적이라 생각된다. 배자는 고대부터 현재까지 착용되어진 소매가 짧거나 없는 형태의 복식으로 다양한 이너웨어 위에 코디네이션해서 입을 수 있는 아이템이며 현대인들이 부담 없이 착용할 수 있으리라 생각되어 선정하였다. 본 연구는 배자를 응용한 복식을 현대인들이 실생활에서 착용 할 수 있도록 디자인을 제시하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 배자는 삼국시대부터 착용되었고 조선시대에는 다양한 형태로 세분화되었다. 현대적인 디자인을 위한 배자의 특징은 소재와 맞깃, 옆선, 여밈 방법, 배자 길이를 들 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 배자유물이 남아있는 조선시대 배자 중 방한을 목적으로 한 털배자, 누비 배자, 솜배자를 선정하여 가능한 한 유물 그대로 재현하고 현재 사용되고 있는 소재 중 울, 체크, 스웨이드, 데님을 이용하여 색채와 디테일에 변화를 통하여 현대배자로 새롭게 디자인하였다. 재현한 배자와 현대적으로 디자인 된 배자를 같은 복식 위에 코디네이션 하는 방법을 제시하므로 현대인들이 일상생활에서 전통복식을 착용할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였다. 전통복식은 단순한 옷 이상의 의미로 그 속에 내재된 전통문화에 대한 관심을 이끌어 내고 다음 세대에 이러한 문화를 자연스럽게 계승시킬 수 있는 교육적인 효과도 기대할 수 있다.
