The contemporary city is mainly concerned with the interpretation of images revealed, rather than the reading of individual objects. Thus, the relationship between parts in the contemporary city is very unclear and ambiguous to us. For understanding of the city, this paper suggests Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne as a method to read and interpret the city through nonphysical element, memory and symbol. Mnemosyne atlas project is a constellation of images which consist of the plates of books, magazines, newspapers, advertisements and other visual documents on black panels. Mnemosyne atlas is characterized with complexity, duality, and simultaneity, and these characteristics are suggested as a interpretative framework. In addition, these are converted to compactness, tension, and openness to test in a real design work. Finally, this study aims to focus on the possibility of design application through mnemosyne.

현대 도시는 개체가 지니고 있는 의미의 해석보다, 외부로 드러나는 이미지에 대한 해석이 주류를 이루고 있다. 이에 현대 도시는 그것을 이루고 있는 요소들 간의 관계가 불명확하고 모호한 성격을 지니고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 도시를 해석함에 있어 물리적인 요소가 아닌 비-물리적인 요소인 ‘기억’과 그것을 통해서 도출된 ‘상징’을 통해서, 도시에 잠재되어 있는 의미를 읽어내고 해석하는 방법론으로 아비 바르부르크의 ‘므네모시네’ Atlas를 제안한다. 그리고 ‘므네모시네’ Atlas의 특징을 ‘복합성(Complexity)’, ‘이중성(Duplicity)’ ‘동시성(Simultaneity)’으로 분류하고, 이러한 특징들을 통해서 도시 관계를 재구축하기 위한 새로운 해석의 틀(frame)을 제시한다. 또한 이론적인 부분에서 도출된 복합성, 이중성, 동시성을 설계작업에 적용하기 위하여, 도출된 특징을 각각 ‘압축(Compact)’, ‘긴장(Tension)', '열림(Openness)'으로 각각 치환하고, ‘므네모시네’ Atlas를 적용한 설계안을 제안한다.
