In Korea, since more than 70% of housing type is apartment, the apartment buildings have become most distinct visual elements in urban visual environment. Especially the exterior color of apartment buildings is one of the most important stimulus among visual elements of townscape or streetscape. The object of this study is to provide systematic and scientific data for color planning of apartment building. In order to find out principles of color design in apartment housing, apartment buildings' exterior colors were classified by the difference of Hue, Value and Chroma into sixteen samples and then the satisfaction preference for each of them by users characteristics has been analysed. The results of correlation analysis showed the relationship between satisfaction and color variables of Hue, Value and Chroma. The results of ANOVA and Duncan turned out significantly different according to age, occupation, education and income groups. In this study users were classified into three groups: Teenagers and those in their twenties with monthly income of lower than 2,000,000 won was Group 1. Those in their thirties and forties with monthly income between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 won was Group 2. And those in their fifties earning more than 3,000,000 won was classified as Group 3. The users of Group 1 were found to prefer the colors of long wave on Hue, high key on Value and Chroma. The users in Group 2 were inclined to prefer the colors of short wave on Hue, low key on Value and Chroma, while Group 3 preferred the colors of short wave on Hue, low key on Value and low key on Chroma.

보다 안락하고 쾌적한 도시경관을 형성하기 위해서는 색채경관의 형성과정 및 방법, 특성에 대한 세심한 고찰이 초기단계부터 필요하다. 더욱이 공동주택 외장색채는 다른 요소들에 비하여 도시경관에서의 비중이 크므로 그 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 이러한 공동주택 외장색채의 성격상, 질서성 속에서 다양성을 확보할 수 있는 보편적이고 객관적인 색채계획 방법이 요구된다. 따라서 특정 색채를 지정하는 방법보다는 색채사용 범위를 한정하고 그 제한된 범위 안에서 입주자의 선호도를 반영하는 방법으로서 색채 삼속성의 범위에 따른 조합 방법의 유형을 분류와 이를 활용한 색채계획 방법을 위한 기초적 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 정량화 자료를 활용하여 단지별 입주 예정자를 중심으로 물리적 요인(연령, 성, 학력, 직업, 소득)과 심리적 요인(외부 이미지의 형용사 군집)을 파악하여 계열별 색채 및 군집 내 선호색채를 중심으로 하여 기초적이고 최소한의 색채 삼속성의 범위를 제한하고 조합하는 유형화에 의한 색채계획 방법의 가능성을 타진하였다.
