This study was to develop the biodiversity educational program based on ESD for upper grades of elementary school, and to investigate the influence on awareness and attitude for the biodiversity of 5th graders in an elementary school in Seoul. To achieve the purpose, documentary and investigatory research was conducted and thereafter the program developed and implemented following the 4 stages of planning, preparation, development and improvement. The experiment was made progress as one-group pretest-posttest design, and the program was applied to a class for two hours every week in discretionary activity class for 8 weeks. A questionnaire was used to survey the effects of students' awareness and attitude on biodiversity. The I-STATistics program was used to analyze the results. The results were as follows. First, the contents related to biodiversity in the 7th and 2007 revised curriculum were insufficiently introduced. Second, the biodiversity educational program had a positive effect on the student`s awareness and attitude about biodiversity. Third, the biodiversity educational program had a positive correlation(from .437 to .663) between awareness and attitude. Fourth, according to qualitative results, students appear to be more concerned and interested in the biodiversity, learning motivation and comprehension after receiving the biodiversity education. In conclusion, the biodiversity educational program has a positive effect on elementary school students' awareness and attitude. Therefore, more intensive research should be conducted, linking teaching and learning methods, as a follow-up activity.

본 연구는 7차 교육과정의 교과서 및 2007 교육과정의 해설서를 바탕으로 교육과정을 분석하여, 생물다양성 관련 내용이 얼마나 반영되어 있는지 확인하고, 도출한 시사점을 바탕으로 기획, 준비, 개발, 개선의 4단계를 거쳐 지속가능발전에 기반을 둔 생물다양성 교육프로그램을 개발하였다. 개발된 프로그램은 생물다양성에 관한 인식과 태도에 미치는 효과와 지속성을 검증하기 위하여 초등학교 5학년 1개 반을 대상으로 사전·사후 단일집단 설계를 적용하여 8주에 걸쳐 총 16차시 수업을 실시하였다. 결과 분석은 사전, 사후 1차, 사후 2차 검사 방법으로 정량적·정성적 분석을 실시하였으며, 정량적 검사지는 최은영(2007)과 윤소현(2008)의 설문지를 재구성하였다. 연구 결과, 7차 및 2007 교육과정에는 생물다양성과 관련된 내용이 생물다양성의 정의와 가치에만 한정되어 있으며, 명시적으로 생물다양성을 드러내는 부분이 매우 적었다. 생물다양성에 관한 인식과 태도의 사전 및 사후검사를 비교한 결과 개발된 프로그램은 학생들의 생물다양성에 관한 인식과 태도 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 생물다양성에 관한 인식과 태도간에는 정적인 상관관계를 보여주었다. 그리고 정성적 분석 결과, 개발된 프로그램을 진행하는 동안 학생들은 생물다양성 뿐만 아니라 환경 전반에 대해 관심을 갖게 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 초등학교에서 활용할 수 있는 효과적인 생물다양성 교육프로그램 구현의 첫걸음이므로 앞으로 초등학교에서 지속가능발전을 지향하는 생물다양성 교육프로그램을 교육현장에서 활용할 수 있는 체계적인 방안을 비롯한, 보다 심층적인 연구 및 교수·학습 활동에 관한 후속 연구가 필요하다고 사료된다.
