The purpose of this paper is to analyze the study of understanding social problems, focusing on a social studies lesson in an elementary school. It aims to elucidate the structure and character of this lesson in terms of the framework of HAL(Holistic Analysis of Lessons) proposed by Lee(2010a). HAL was based on two theories; alternative framework proposed by Hallden(1994) and structure of knowledge proposed by Moriwake(1987). As a result, the four following points emerged: Firstly, to aid the child? overall understanding, the lesson plan was composed of various urban social problems; these were not controversial issues, but rather common social problems. Secondly, the lesson was designed so that the children were able to logically understand social problems through inquiry. Thirdly, throughout the lesson the children inquired about social problems logically and independently. Fourthly, the children understood various urban social problems; however, they demonstrated greater understanding of problems encountered in their own life experience.

본 연구의 목적은 사회문제의 이해를 목적으로 하는 초등 사회과 수업을 분석하여 그 구조와 특징을 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 森分(1987)의 ‘지식의 구조’와 Hallden(1994)의 ‘대체적 개념틀’에 기반을 둔 사회과 수업 분석틀인 HAL(李,2010a)을 이용하여 수업에서의 교사 요인과 학생 요인을 종합적으로 분석한다. 수업분석 결과, 다음과 같은 네 가지 특징이 밝혀졌다. 첫째, 논쟁문제가 아닌 객관적 상태로서 존재하는 사회문제인 ‘도시 문제’를 주제로 다루고 있으며, 그것을 다양한 측면에서 종합적으로 파악할 수 있도록 구성된 수업이다. 둘째, 학생이 탐구 과정을 통하여 사회문제를 논리적으로 이해할 수 있도록 계획되어 있는 수업이다. 셋째, 실제 수업에서 학생들은 탐구 과정을 통하여 사회문제를 보다 자주적이고 논리적으로 파악하고 있다. 넷째, 학생들은 도시 문제의 다양한 측면을 자신의 생활 경험과 밀접한 측면으로부터 이해하고 있으며, 도시 문제들을 종합적으로 이해하고 있다.
