The purpose of this paper is to search the role of south korean youth in order to help school life adjustment of defecting north korean youth. Defecting north korean youth were in school maladjustment. South Korean youth should teach how to adjust in school life of them. Therefore, the South Korean youth should know about the defecting north korean youth. This paper is composed of three steps. First, we examined the characteristics of defecting North Korean youth. Second, the author studied the initial adaptation process to South Korea of defecting north korean youth. They have difficulties in school life in south korea. The greatest obstacle faced at school is their academic progress. Especially the academic gap is still existing, it become worse as time goes by. Third, defecting north korean youth should learn how to overcome difficulties in school life. Mentoring is a good way to resolve the maladjustment in school. South Korean youth can help defecting North Korean youth to become their mentor. South Korean youth are a mentor and mentee is defecting North Korean youth. North and South Korean youth have a lot in common. But Defecting North Korean Youth experienced academic gap, friend relationship, linguistic problem etc. It is very necessary to pay attention to adjust of defecting north korean youth.

본 논문의 목적은 북한이탈 청소년의 남한 학교생활 적응을 돕기 위해 남한 청소년이 알아야 할 북한이탈 청소년의 특징 및 남한 청소년의 역할을 탐색하는 것이다. 북한이탈 청소년이 남한 학생과 원만한 교우관계를 형성하고, 학업 성취를 통해 꿈을 이루어나가기 위해서는 무엇보다도 남한 청소년의 북한이탈 청소년에 대한 이해가 선행되어야 한다. 왜냐하면 북한이탈 청소년이 남한의 학교생활에 원만하게 적응하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 남한 학생의 도움이 필요하기 때문이다. 본 연구는 3단계로 구성되었다. 1단계는 남한 청소년이 북한이탈 청소년의 특징을 이해함으로써 북한이탈 청소년 이해 교육의 기초를 마련하기 위한 것이 목적이다. 우선 북한이탈 청소년의 입국 현황 및 증가 추세 파악을 통해 북한이탈 청소년 이해의 필요성을 제기한다. 2단계는 북한이탈 청소년의 남한 생활 적응 과정을 파악함으로써 북한이탈 청소년의 현 상황을 보다 구체적으로 이해하고자 하는 것이 목적이다. 북한이탈 청소년이 남한에 입국하여 받게 되는 초기 남한 적응 교육의 과정 및 특징을 통해 그들을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 3단계는 남한 청소년이 북한이탈 청소년의 성공적인 적응을 돕는 방법을 찾아보는 것이 목적이다. 남한 청소년(멘토)과 북한이탈 청소년(멘티)간의 멘토링은 북한이탈 청소년의 남한 학교생활의 성공적 적응을 위해 효과적인 방법이다. 북한이탈 청소년에 대한 남한 청소년의 멘토 활동은 ‘통일’ 과정에서 남북한 사회통합에 기본적인 토대를 마련하는 작업이라 할 수 있다.
