Linguistic computations are designed to follow the requirement that all derivations be as minimal as possible. In performance, however, all derivations are not always equal in computational loads. This study investigates the processing patterns of two syntactic operations, scrambling and VP ellipsis, from a multi-disciplinary approach which is based on experimental psychology ad physiology. The psychological experiment of online response time in processing raises the paradox between minimal computation and easy processing, in that scrambling can not only trigger the syntactic complexity, but help reduce the reading time when combined with deletion. This study, based on further MR spectroscopical experiment of the relative ratio between GABA and glutaminate in pediatric and adolescent brain development, suggests that competence and performance are interchangeable in such a way that the same principle applies to both components and one gives the instructions to the other.
