For the past thirty years, there has been much debate on Spirituality in both universities and churches, and voluminous works on Spirituality were published. However, there has yet been a unified and consistent view on the definition of Spirituality and the theoretical methodology behind it. The term ‘Spirituality’ has been identified with many different meanings since its first use in Paul’s letters to present days. Different aspects of Spirituality has been emphasised and studied depending on the historical backgrounds. But to this day, Spirituality is lively debated as a subject of academic discipline.
For instance, Schneiders defines Spirituality and investigates the essence of Spirituality from an anthropological perspective. Moreover, she reveals that the research method on Spirituality exists in a reciprocal relationship with various other disciplines. Hence, due to the nature and the methodology of the study of Spirituality, she identifies Spirituality as a discipline independent of theology. Nevertheless, such understanding of Spirituality as an independent discipline has a tendency to view theology as being restrictive.
Furthermore, Hanson argues that it is only logical and reasonable to label the study of Spirituality as theology of Spirituality because it is a discipline that should be studied as a part of theology as a whole. Also the methodology of the study of Spirituality lacks clarity. The important lesson to draw from this debate is that Spirituality has been studied as a discipline in their definitions and methodologies of Spirituality
However, Lonergan’s study of Spirituality through the theological method introduced a new dimension to the research of Spirituality. According to his method, the questions of the essence of Spirituality are no longer valid and he went further to combine Schneider’s anthological approach and Hanson’s doctrinal theology approach. More importantly, his transcendental method includes the essence of Spirituality and other various suggested methodologies, and thus proposes a new pathway for theology of Spirituality. Knowledge is derives from the works of our mind, consciousness and aim, and the process that leads to the fundamental human actions is the process of our human consciousness to seek after our existence. Through the cognitional, epistemological, metaphysical questions, Lonergan was able to take the path of transcendental disciplines. He proposed questions such as ‘When I am knowing, what am I doing?’, ‘Why do I know what I am doing?’ and ‘What do I know when I am doing it?
In these three questions we can find the theoretical essence and methodology of Spirituality. Henceforth, by undertaking a careful consideration of Spirituality itself in Lonergan’s transcendental method, the study of Spirituality as a discipline will mature and become more extensive.

지난 30년 동안 영성에 대해 활발한 논의가 대학과 교회에서 진행되어 왔고 수 없이 많은 저술들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 그러나 영성의 정의와 학문적 방법론에 대해 통일되고 일치된 견해를 찾을 수 없다. 영성이란 용어가 처음 바울서신에 사용된 이래 오늘에 이르기까지 다양한 의미로 사용되었다. 영성은 역사적 환경과 신앙 전통에 따라 각기 다른 측면이 강조되었다. 20세기 후반에 이르러 영성은 전문적 학문의 대상으로 활발하게 논의 되고 있다. 특히 슈나이더는 인류학적 관점에서 영성을 정의하고 그 본질의 분석했다. 무엇보다 그녀는 영성의 연구 방법론은 다양한 학문들과 상호관계 속에 있음을 밝혔다. 따라서 그녀는 영성의 본질적 특성과 방법론 때문에 신학의 한 분야가 아니라 독립된 학문의 장르가 되어야 한다고 했다. 그러나 한슨은 영성 연구는 신학 안에서 연구될 수 있는 신학의 한 분야로 영성신학이라고 명명하는 것이 더 타당하다고 했다. 이러한 한슨의 연구는 계시와 기독교 전통의 맥락에서 영성을 이해함으로 포스트모던의 다원성과 개인의 주체적 경험에 대한 이해를 제한시켰다.
