Korean Christianity as a foreign religion has been growing successfully for last two centuries. It is one of the reasons that it has well reflecting the Korean national emotions, especially han, and the Korean's understandings about the divine beings in the worships and other spiritual practices. As a unique prayer style, Tongsunggido in Korean Church has been already known to the churches all over the world. However, it shouldn't been overlooked that the identity of Tongsunggido is questioned not only by the churches in the world but by even Korean Christians because of the lack of theological understandings and practices. Through the study of the origin, the etymological meanings of Tongsunggido, and the biblical references related to it, I suggest the identity of Tongsunggido as communal lament prayer and a new direction of Tongsunggido for the future in this article. Regarding the relation between Korean Christianity and Korean unique emotion han, Tongsunggido is one of the wonderful spiritual channels to release the emotion of han in the lament prayer. Lament prayer is not the result of the bad faith. Rather, it is a natural expression, further a faithful witness by who trust in God to the sufferings, evil, and sins in the world. As a communal lament prayer, Tongsunggido should bring God the communal sufferings as well as individual sufferings caused by the evil power.
I suggest that the biblical female images of God, especially motherly images are more effective for Tongsunggido than any other patriarchal images because except some natural disasters most sufferings in human society are caused by the absolute or distorted patriarchal powers. In fact, the female images of God in the Bible are related to the lamentable situations, being used for the consolation and intercession of God. The identity of Tongsunggido as a communal lament prayer, the theologically appropriate practices, and the recommendable metaphors for God in Tongsunggido are the purposes of this article.

지난 2세기 동안 외래종교로서의 기독교는 한국에서 커다란 성공을 이루었다. 특별히 한국인의 고유한 정서와 신에 대한 이해들을 기독교의 실천에 잘 반영한 것이 성공의 주요한 요인이었다. 한국인의 대표적인 정서 중의 하나로 ‘한’을 들 수 있는데, 한국 기독교는 이 한의 정서를 통성기도의 방식 속에서 승화하며 괄목할 만한 기도의 역사를 일구고 교회성장을 이루었던 것이다. 통성기도는 이미 세계교회 속에서 고유명사화 되어 많이 알려지고 있다. 그러나 통성기도에 대한 통일된 신학적 이해와 실천의 결여가 세계 기독교인들에게는 물론 한국 기독교인들에게까지 통성기도의 정체성에 대해 묻게 만들고 있는 것도 외면할 수 없는 현실이다.
필자는 통성기도의 발생적 기원과 어원적 의미들, 그리고 통성기도와 연관된 성서적 언급들에 대한 연구를 통해 통성기도를 공동체적 탄원기도로 정의하며 1세기의 역사를 지닌 통성기도의 바른 미래를 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 통성기도가 왜 한국인의 고유한 기도형식 중 하나가 되었는가의 원인을 한국인의 고유정서인 한과의 관련성 속에서 살펴보았다. 탄원기도로서의 통성기도는 한국 기독교인들에게 그 억눌렸던 한의 고통과 억울함을 토로할 수 있는 건강한 영적 채널이 될 수 있었던 것이다. 그리고 탄원기도라는 것이 성서적 신앙에 일치하는 것이며 기독교 예배의 자리에 가능한 것인지에 대해 성서적, 그리고 역사적 실천의 증거들을 통해 그것이 결코 결여된 신앙의 표현이 아니라 하나님을 믿는 자들의 자연스러운 것이며 오히려 바른 신앙의 사람들은 탄원기도를 통해서 그들의 실존의 문제를 솔직히 하나님께 가지고 와야 한다. 공동체적 탄원기도로서의 통성기도는 공동체의 아픔을 가지고 하나님께 나와 중보하며 세상의 악과 죄의 세력들을 드러내는 공간과 시간이 되어야 한다.
필자는 자연재해를 제외한 대부분의 인간사회가 경험하는 고통들이 가부장적 힘의 오용과 남용에서 비롯된 것이기에 탄원기도에는 가부장적 하나님의 이미지보다 하나님의 여성이미지, 특히 어머니 이미지가 더 효과적인 이미지라고 주장한다. 사실 대부분의 성경 속 하나님의 여성 이미지들이 탄원적 상황에서 하나님의 은총을 기다리는 기도와 바람 가운데 사용되었다는 것을 증거하고 있다. 공동체적 탄원기도로서의 통성기도의 정체성과 바른 실천, 그리고 이런 신앙적 실천에 어울리는 적절한 메타포의 선정에 대한 것이 본 연구의 취지이다.
