The study of this dissertation focuses on reasonable alternatives concerning changes and challenges that can be found in diverse worship scenes in Korea. It is not advisable to define our worship styles in terms of modern, traditional, liturgical and ancient. Should there be an effort to wholly understand the conception of worship being given in spirit and in truth, it would be able to perceive the will of God who seeks the heart rather than styles. For this purpose this study was proceeded under several premises. First premise is that we should have a wider application of the conception of the worship. Under this premise, the study dealt standpoints-such as knowing God properly who is the subject of the worship, etc-that are necessary to actively accept and apply the changes and challenges of modern worship. Next follows the in-depth study on the essence of worship contents based on a question ‘is it appropriate to simplify or diversify the contents?’ Along with that the study focused on a certain part of modern worship which started from the ‘open worship’, the ‘worship and praise.’ It examined the question of whether the worship and praise style worship which is mainly supported by praise bands rather than choir and orchestra is the alternative tothe modern worship or not. What is an appropriate modern worship? To answer this, the study mentions about worships in Unites States which cannot be overlooked in order to seek the right direction for our worship and also to give proper understanding to the congregations who are the liturgical body of worship. Also the question of ‘could the integration of worship as an alternative for the aging worship in Korea be led to the integration of generation?’ was dealt. Finally, this study pointed out the necessity of getting prepared for the need of the church and worship both for worship itself and leaders of the worship. Along with that it suggested practical alternatives on issues of restoring the identity of 21st century worship and of becoming influential leaders and future partners who are able to perform proper duties and functions within the church altogether as the professionals of both the worship and music.
The purpose of this study is not to bring a certain controversial subject or to suggest a proposition, but instead, to realize that our worship is in the midst of change and challenge by examining the worship scenes of US which indeed affected us the most. It is my desire to share my thought and heart to worship God in spirit and in truth; the worship that please God. It is my prayer for all worshipers to prepare for the future to have wider view point and understanding facing the reality through this study.

본 논문은 한국교회의 다양한 예배 현장을 배경으로 일어나고 있는 변화와 도전에 대한 합리적인 대안들을 고찰하였다. 현재 우리가 드리고 있는 예배를 현대니 전통이니 또는 예전이니 고전이니 하는 개념을 통해 나누는 것은 바람직하지 못하다. 신령과 진정으로 드리는 예배의 개념을 온전히 이해하려는 노력이 있다면 형식보다는 중심을 살피시는 하나님의 의지도 깨달을 수 있다. 이를 위해 다음의 몇 가지 전제를 중심으로 본 연구는 진행되었다. 먼저 예배의 개념을 보다 폭넓게 가져야 한다는 전제아래 현대 예배의 변화와 도전을 보다 적극적으로 수용하고 적용하기 위해 필요한 관점들-예배의 주체란, 예배의 대상이신 하나님 바로 알기 등-을 언급하였다. 이어서 예배의 순서 안에 꼭 담겨야 할 내용이 무엇이며, 이를 간결화하거나 다양한 형식을 갖추도록 하는 것이 타당한가란 질문과 함께 ‘열린예배’로부터 시작된 현대 예배의 개념적 이해를 ‘경배찬양’이라 불리는 대표적인 현대 예배의 한 부분을 보다 심도 있게 다루었다. 이 과정을 통해 성가대와 오케스트라를 중심으로 한 예배보다는 찬양팀과 찬양악단(밴드)을 중심으로 한 경배찬양 예배가 현대예배의 대안인가에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한 바람직한 현대예배란 무엇인가란 질문과 함께 다양한 예배의 현장이 나아갈 방향이 무엇이며, 이를 위해 예배의 예전적 주체인 회중이 올바르게 이해하고 접근할 수 있도록 하는데 반드시 관과해서는 않 될 미국교회의 예배현실을 언급하였다. 뿐만 아니라 우리나라 예배의 고령화 현실에 대한 대안으로 예배 통합이 곧 세대 통합으로 이어질 수 있는가에 대한 질문에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 마지막으로 이 논문은 예배와 예배 안의 리더쉽을 가진 예배자 모두에게 보다 적극적인 교회의 필요와 예배의 필요를 채울 수 있는 준비가 필요함을 지적하고 예배와 음악의 전문 사역자의 입장에서 함께 직면하고 있는 21세기 예배의 정체성회복과 함께 교회 안에 바른 역할과 기능을 수행할 수 있는 영향력과 지도력이 있는 미래의 동역자가 되기 위한 현실적인 대안들을 제시하였다.
이 논문은 어떤 논쟁의 대상이나 명제를 제시하려는 것이 목적이 아니며 우리의 현실에 행해지고 있는 예배의 현장에 가장 큰 영향을 끼쳐온 미국 교회의 예배 현장을 관찰하고, 변화와 다양한 도전의 중심에 우리의 예배가 있음을 깨닫기 원하는 필자의 진심을 담았다. 신령과 진정으로 예배하며 성실한 마음과 공교한 손으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 예배를 세우기 위해 좁은 필자의 생각과 마음을 나누는 것을 목표로 하였다. 부디 이 글을 통해 보다 넓은 관점과 이해력을 가지고 예배 현실을 직시하며 내일을 준비하는 예배자들 모두가 되기를 간절히 기도한다.
