This is an attempt to understand characteristics of the contemporary evangelical preaching in terms of its socio-environmental contexts. The locus that evangelical preaching takes in today's church and religious market has an ironical aspect. Evangelical preaching is still most popular and, to that degree, most influential to common people and preachers. By contrast, in the mainline theoretical arena, it is dealt with as if its substance were absent, or as if it had been long declared to be dead. This tendency itself may characterize the contemporary evangelical preaching. But it does not reflect reality.
This article is produced with a view to surveying overlooked significances of the contemporary evangelical preaching in terms of today's situations, though it may not intend to turn around the above tendency. Especially important is the contemporary evangelical preaching's connection with the New Homiletics, which dominated the late 20th century and still holds influence in the early 21the century. The New Homiletics itself arose as a response to the challenges faced by the contemporary church, and keeps its influence because of the continual presence of that challenges. The contemporary evangelical preaching has been situated in the same historical, social environments, and formed in its characteristics through responding to them. Thus, connecting the two preaching camps will contribute to a more multi-level understanding of conditions and directions of the contemporary preaching in general.
In the article, the place and significance of evangelicalism in the contemporary church and society is first examined, and then the basic features of the contemporary evangelical preaching is understood in light of that examination. Those features are next connected to the New Homiletics' perception of contemporary situations. A description of characteristics and trends of the six schools of the contemporary evangelical preaching follows, which have arisen from that neo-homiletical perception, and then an analysis of problems and tasks of the contemporary evangelical preaching, common to all the six schools, is given. In the conclusive part, the author shows that the current situations of the new century tend to make the contemporary evangelical preaching and the New Homiletics closer to each other.

필자는 본고에서 현대복음주의 설교의 성격을 역사적 및 사회 문화적 환경의 맥락에서 이해하려고 한다. 복음주의 설교가 현대의 교회와 종교시장에서 차지하는 위치는 아이러니한 측면이 있다. 복음주의 설교는 여전히 가장 대중적이며 그만큼 지배적인 영향을 미치고 있으나 주류 설교학적 이론의 장에서는 마치 그 실체가 없는 듯, 혹은 이미 오래전에 사망진단이 내려진 과거의 기억인 듯 취급된다는 것이다. 이런 경향 자체가 현대복음주의 설교의 특징일 수도 있겠으나 교회와 종교시장의 현실을 반영하는 것은 아니다.
본고는 이 같은 사정을 시정하겠다는 것은 아니나 그간 간과했던 복음주의 설교의 현대적 위치와 의의를 현대적 상황이라는 역사적 환경적 맥락에서 생각해보려는 의도로 작성되었다. 특히 20세기 후반부를 지배했고 21세기 초인 지금도 여전히 그 영향력을 잃지 않고 있는 신설교학과의 연관성 속에서 현대복음주의 설교의 특성을 드러내려고 한다. 신설교학 자체가 현대 교회가 당면한 특별한 상황에 대한 대응으로 일어난 운동이며 그 같은 상황의 지속이 신설교학의 영향을 지속시켜 왔기 때문이다. 현대복음주의 설교는 신설교학을 촉발하고 교회적 관심의 중심에 있게 한, 동일한 역사적 사회적 환경에 놓여 있으며 동일한 환경에 대응하는 가운데 그 특성을 형성해 왔기 때문이다. 양자를 연관시켜 이해하는 것은 현대 설교 일반이 처해 있는 여건과 방향을 보다 다각도로 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
본고에서 필자는 먼저 현대 교회와 사회에서 복음주의가 차지하는 특별한 위치와 의의를 점검하고 이로부터 현대복음주의 설교의 특징을 이해하고, 이를 다시 신설교학적 상황인식과 연관시킬 것이다. 그 다음 이 같은 상황인식에 기초해 일어난 현대복음주의 설교의 6가지 분파의 특징과 동향을 각각 서술하고, 이로부터 현대복음주의 설교의 문제의식과 과제를 분석할 것이다. 마지막 결론부에서 21세기 초의 상황이 현대복음주의 설교와 신설교학을 더욱 가깝게 만들고 있음을 보여 줄 것이다.
