This study is an attempt to applicate Hargreaves and Galton’s ‘artistic development’ to dance development bringing the artistic quality in dance into focus. Hargreaves and Galton’s artistic development theory is composed of five phases; presymbolic phase(age 0~2), figural phase(age 2~5), schematic phase(age 5~8), rule system phase(age 8~15), metacognitive phase(age 15~). Each phase describes domain specific developments and cognitive aesthetic development(Cognitive aesthetic development refers to general symbolic developments based on research evidence in music, fine arts, writing, and etc). Various literature related to dance development were reviewed according to five phases, and each phase was described in terms of dance-specific developments, cognitive aesthetic development, and the relationship to music and fine arts. As a result, it was found Hargreaves and Galton’s five phases of artistic development were applicable to dance development on the whole.

이제까지 무용의 발달에 관한 연구는 주로 신체 발달에 기준하여 연구되어 왔다. 그러나 무용도 예술이니만큼 무용의 발달에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 예술성의 발달이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 타 예술 분야의 실증적 연구를 기초로 한 Hargreaves와 Galton의 예술성 발달단계를 무용에 적용하여 무용도 유사한 발달 과정을 거치는가를 알아보고자 하였다. Hargreaves와 Galton은 예술성 발달 연구에 있어
서 각 예술분야 고유의 연령 단계별 발달 사항과 함께 연령 단계별로 예술 전반에 걸쳐 나타나는 상징의 공통적 특성으로서 ‘예술적 인지 발달(cognitive aesthetic developments)’을 제 예술 분야와의 상호 관련 하에서 다섯 단계로 제시하였다. 80년대 이후 현재까지의 무용 발달에 관련된 제 실증적 연구를 토대로 무용의 연령 단계별로 고유한 상징적 사고 양식, 예술 전반에 걸친 보편적 상징 양식으로서의 예술적인지, 타 예술 분야와의 관련성을 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 타 예술 분야와 같이 전상징기(0~2세), 형상기(2~5세), 도식기(5~8세), 규칙체계기(8~15세), 후인지기(15세 이상)에 걸쳐 무용 고유의 연령 단계별 발달 사항이 존재하였으며, 아울러 ‘예술적인지’에 있어서는 단계별로 타 예술 분야와 유사한 특성이 나타났다. 타 예술 분야와의 관련성에 있어서는 0~8세까지 무용과 음악이 관련된 것으로 나타났다. 이와 함께 규칙체계기(8~15세)에 해당 문화권의 예술 규칙체계를 풍부하게 사용할 수 있는 능력과 함께 후인지기(15세 이후)의 관습으로부터 독립된 시각과 같은 공통적 특징은 무용과 타 예술 분야의 관련성을 암시하고 있다. 이와 같이 Hargreaves와 Galton의 예술성 발달단계는 무용에도 적용할 수 있으며, 또한 무용 역시 예술성을 중심으로 한발달단계의 구축이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 앞으로 무용 교과과정이나 프로그램 개발 시에는 예술성 발달을 중심으로 접근하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.
