The paper researched on literature notion of northern Korean learning school writers and contemporary novels, especially investigated on their notion of Chinese novels during 18〜19 century. It is well known that the literature intercourse between China and Korea was active in that period, because of the change in literature transform and external environment. The learners in that period departed from scholar-bureaucrat to the third estate. Therefore, a new learning culture came into existence. During this process, the literature exchange between the two countries became more active and reached to a stage of thorough exchange by the unremitting efforts of communicators and recipients. With dual identity, the northern Korean learning school writhers should be paid more attention because of their proactive, exoteric and original attitude. They showed their different view from scholar-bureaucrat in literature recognizing and interesting, because they constantly concerned about Chinese and Western civilization. Especially, they showed more openness and inclusive to classic Chinese novels. The paper introduces socio-cultural background and character that the northern Korean learning school writers came into contact with Chinese novels, and their visual angle or attitude to popular miscellanea and historical novels. On this basis, the paper researched the substance and character of the notion of classical Chinese novels by northern Korean learning writers in this process. As a whole, compared to scholar-bureaucrat and general readers, they showed up an essential difference in the notion of Chinese novels. All of this owed to their open consciousness, heightened awareness and excellent cognitive ability. However, even though they belonged to the same school, there are also some different understanding and attitude to classical Chinese novels, and the paper only does an overview. Generally speaking, the paper is aimed at analyzing and researching on notion of Chinese novels by the northern Korean learning school writers in dynasty of Korea in 18〜19 century, to explain their extraordinary literature view and literary fashion and character in the whole literary world of the day. 본 논문은 북학파문인들의 문화의식 및 문학관을 재조명하기 위한 일환으로 18〜19세기 북학파문인들의 대중국소설관에 대해 개략적으로 고찰하였다. 주지하다시피 18〜19세기는 조선 사회내부의 문화적인 변동과 외부 환경의 변화로 중한 문화교류가 점차 활기를 띠기 시작하였던 시기이다. 이 시기에 독서층이 사대부계층을 넘어서 일반인들에게까지 확장되기 시작하면서 전대와는 다른 성격의 독서문화가 서서히 자리 잡아가기 시작하였다. 이 과정에 많은 수용자, 전파자들이 있었고 또 그들의 헌신적이고 적극적인 노력이 있었기 때문에 문학교류가 더 활발하게 이루어 질 수 있었던 것이다. 그 가운데서도 주목되는 것은 당시 가장 능동적이고 개방적이며 독창적인 수용자이자 전파자의 역할을 담당했던 북학파문인들이다. 그들은 이 시기 중국으로부터 유입되는 중화문명과 문화, 그리고 서구문화에 대해 점차 깊은 관심을 갖고 새롭게 인식하게 되었는바 그 문화의식이나 학문적인 취향, 또는 인식 면에서 동시대 사대부들과는 다른 면모를 보여 주었다. 특히 중국의 고전소설에 대한 이해와 수용의식에서 북학파문인들은 보다 개방적이고 폭넓으며 깊이 있는 인식과 태도를 보여 주었다. 본고는 이 점에 유념하면서 당시 북학파문인들이 중국의 소설들을 접하게 된 사회문화적 배경 및 특징을 살펴보고 그러한 배경하에서 그들이 당시 중국이나 조선에서 유행되었던 잡기류(雜記類) 소설이나 연의체(演義體) 소설들을 어떤 시각에서 어떻게 수용하였으며 그 구체적인 상황이 어떠했는지를 살펴보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 주로 이러한 과정에서 형성된 북학파문인들의 중국소설관의 실질과 특징에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 총괄적으로 볼 때 북학파문인들의 대중국소설관은 당시 사대부계층의 독자들이나 일반 독자들과는 질적으로 다른 양상을 보여 주고 있다. 이는 열린 의식을 바탕으로 한 북학파문인들의 뛰어난 감수성 및 인식능력과 갈라놓을 수 없다. 그리고 같은 계열의 북학파문인들이라 할지라도 중국의 고전소설에 대한 인식과 태도에서 각자 주목했던 문제들이 다소 다른 양상을 나타낸 경우도 있었는데 본고는 이 점에 대해서도 대략적이나마 살펴보았다. 요컨대 본 논문은 조선조 18〜19세기 북학파문인들이 대중국소설관에 대한 분석과 고찰을 통해 그들의 문학관, 그리고 나아가서 그 당시 문단의 소설문학의 경향 및 특징을 깊이 있게 폭넓게 이해할 수 있는 시각을 제시했다는 점에서 일정한 의미가 있다고 생각한다.
