Park Kye-Ju was born in China, and spent his most important period of life, adolescence, in Northeast China. About 1940, after his returning to Korea, he continued to write and publish short stories based on his own experience of immigrant life, which reflected Korean’s living conditions in Northeast China. After Korea’s recovery, he collected these stories and published as a book Virgin Land. It’s worth noticing that some of his migration novels had been rewritten, and became quite different from the original ones. Judging from the features or effects of rewriting, the purpose of rewriting cannot be summed up to improve its artistic quality. Through changing the status of his character, adding a lot of emotion expression and action writing, the author indeed improved its political and ideological level, and emphasized his consciousness of resistance. Unfortunately, his purpose was so strong that he didn’t obtain the expected sublimation of aesthetics value or writing technique, but produced some bad effects such as being unnatural, lack of reality, etc. However, if we think carefully about his rewriting, and take the historical environment, circumstance of literature and his own experience into account, we will find that we can’t put the hat of Japanolatryon on him curtly. The rewriting reflected form another side the interactive relationship between individuals and his age and society, that is, contradiction, anxiety and distress the author experienced when facing the dark reality of society and Japanese aggression.

朴啓周는 중국 간도 태생으로 만주에서 청소년기를 보낸 작가이다. 1940년대 전후로 그는 자신의 중국 이민생활 체험을 토대로 조선 이주민의 삶의 현장을 다각적으로 형상화한 소설들을 창작, 발표했다. 유의해야 할 점은 그중 일부 이민소설이 광복 후 새롭게 개작되었다는 것이다. 이 점에 대해서는 작가 자신도 솔직하게 고백하고 있다. 그러나 그 개작의 특징이나 효과를 보면, 개작의 목적은 단순히 작품의 완성도를 제고시키기 위한 데만은 있지 않은 것 같다. 작가는 등장인물 신분의 철저한 변화와 대량의 심리묘사, 행동묘사 등을 첨가하는 방식을 통해 작품의 반일 저항적인 측면만을 강화시키려 한 탓으로 개작을 통해 이루어야 할 미적 가치나 기법 면에서의 목적을 이루지 못했을 뿐만 아니라 오히려 어색한 부분이 많아지고 이야기의 사실성이 떨어지는 등 역효과를 나타내기도 했다. 즉 원작의 뚜렷한 개성이 약화되고 시대적 혹은 역사적 의미가 강화된 셈이다. 그러나 작가 박계주가 처한 시대적 상황이나 문단상황 및 그 자신의 경력을 감안하면서 그의 개작문제를 다시 한 번 고려해 볼 때 우리는 단순하게 그에게 “친일”이라는 모자를 덧씌울 것이 아니라는 점을 깊이 인식하게 된다. 그의 개작은 다른 한 측면에서 침략자의 발밑에 서 짓밟히고 버둥거렸던 망국멸족의 암흑한 사회현실이 작가에게 가져다준 역사인식의 불안 정성과 그러한 현실에서 살아나가야만 했던 작가의 모순되고 불안한 심리 및 그 작가적 고민을 표출하고 있는 것이기도 하기 때문이다.
