It is true that until recently Korean researchers in the field of Russian Far East/Siberia studies mainly focused on its economic values such as natural resources, energy, transportation etc. than any other factors of those regions. Do these regions in the 21st century still has only those economic values to the Korean government? Or are there any other more important factors or values (including economic aspect) of those regions affecting the development of Russian-Korean relations? This study has two purposes. First, the paper attempts to examine how the studies of Russian Far East/Siberia carried out in Korea and to suggest briefly the multilateral values of those regions under the new circumstances of 21st century. Secondly, the paper attempts to suggest several ideas over the development of Russian Far East/Siberia studies in Korea in the future. The author argues that it is necessary to understand and analyse the Russian Far East/Siberia in a multilateral ways (overall) over its various values. More precisely speaking, the studies of those regions in Korea now must begin to examine and to focus not only in the aspect of economic factor but also in the political/strategical/socio-cultural aspects of those regions simultaneously under the new circumstances of the 21st century.

그 동안 극동/시베리아 지역에 대한 한국의 학계, 정부, 경제계 등에서는 동지역에 대한 가치를 주로 천연자원, 교통물류, 에너지협력 등 주로 경제적인 측면에서 분석하고 고찰되어져 왔던 것이 사실이다. 그렇다면, 21세기에 극동/시베리아 지역은 한국에게 주로 아직도 경제적인 가치만을 지니고 있는 것일까? 아니면, 동지역은 경제적인 중요성 가치 이외에 다른 더 중요한 요소가 한-러 및 한-극동/시베리아 관계에 영향을 미치는 것은 아닐까? 본 논문은 다음 두 가지 목적을 가지고 진행하고자 한다. 첫째, 본 논문에서는 그동안 한국에서의 극동/시베리아 연구가 어떻게 진행되어 왔는가에 대한 개괄적인 고찰을 하며 동지역에 대한 21세기 다양한 가치를 여러 측면에서 고찰하고자 한다. 둘째, 본 논문에서는 앞으로 극동/시베리아 연구가 어떻게 진행되어야 하는가에 대한 발전 방향등에 대한 제안을 하고자 한다. 필자는 21세기 러시아의 극동/시베리아 지역의 새로운 정치.경제 질서 형성에 대한 새로운 총체적인 이해가 필요하다고 주장한다. 이에 따라, 본 연구는 21세기 극동/시베리아의 가치는 기존의 경제적 가치와 함께 보다 근본적인 정치/전략/사회문화적인 가치에 초점을 맞추어서 연구할 필요성을 제기한다.
