This study contemplated the structure and features of British police system. In particular, the following features acquired from the study of British police system provide great implications for our nation.
First, the independent police system of Britain is, in short, based on independent police system, and at the same time the central government endlessly develops central control devices and methods to put emphasis on maximizing democracy and efficiency.
Second, another unique thing is that British police utilizes the police commission system and secures the democracy and political neutrality of the police unit.
Third, the British police public official recruitment has the feature of having a wide range of nationalities and ages. The positions are open to anyone with British nationality. The important thing is that anyone from ages 18 to 55 can get the chance. Moreover, it is important that they are open to those ages while also thoroughly filtering the disqualified people in the recruitment process. It can be considered that Britain has set the probationer period of new police officers to 2 years to filter the qualified people.
Fourth, the British police system that attracts us does not appoint police officers to the middle class. That is, British police appoints all as constables, yet selects outstanding workforce after the 2 years of probationer period and offers an opportunity for rapid promotion.
Fifth, British police is maintaining a relatively high level of pay. Sixth, British police is developing and managing police education programs in the political level. That is, British police has diverse methods of providing education training service.
Seventh, it frequently dismisses police candidates through probation system.

본 연구에서는 영국경찰제도의 구조와 특징에 관해 고찰해 보았다. 특히 영국의 경찰제도의 연구를 통해 얻은 다음과 같은 특징들은 우리나라에도 큰 시사점을 던져주고 있다.
첫째, 영국의 자치경찰제도는 한마디로 자치경찰제를 기본 바탕으로 하되 동시에 중앙정부로부터 중앙통제 장치와 방식을 끝임 없이 개발하여 민주성과 효율성을 극대화 해보자는데 역점을 두고 있는 것으로 보인다.
둘째, 또 하나 특이한 점은 영국의 경찰은 경찰위원회 제도를 활용하여 경찰조직의 민주성과 정치적 중립성을 보장하고 있다.
셋째, 영국의 경찰공무원 채용에서는 국적이나 연령이 매우 넓다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 영국 국적 소유자 누구에게나 경찰직을 개방하고 있다. 중요한 것은 18세 이상 55세까지 누구나 경찰직에 도전할 수 있다는 것이다. 무엇보다 채용연령을 개방하되 동시에 그 채용과정에서 부적격자를 철저하게 걸러내고 있는 점도 중요한 특징 중의 하나다. 영국이 신임경찰관의 시보기간을 2년으로 정해 시행하고 있는 것도 적격자 걸러내기 일환에서 이루어지고 있는 것으로 이해된다.
넷째, 특히 우리의 관심을 끄는 영국의 경찰제도는 중간계급으로 경찰관을 임용하지 않고 있다는 점이다. 즉 영국경찰에서는 모두다 순경으로만 임용한다는 점인데 그 대신 우수인력은 시보기간 2년이 지난 후 선발되어 고속승진 과정의 기회를 부여한다는 점이다.
다섯째, 영국경찰은 비교적 높은 보수수준을 유지시키고 있다는 특징을 지닌다.
여섯째, 영국경찰은 정책적 수준에서 경찰교육 프로그램을 개발하고 운영하는 특징을 지니고 있다. 즉 영국경찰은 다양한 교육훈련 서비스 제공방식을 가지고 있다.
일곱째, 견습제도를 통해 수시로 경찰후보자를 면직시키는 특징을 가지고 있다.
