This paper focuses on the challenges media education has to face under current conditions. It starts with an overview of key aspects of media education, the changes in its underlying philosophy and its theoretical foundation in a cultural studies approach. The paper then addresses three main challenges: The first one refers to the need to take the affective dimension of media seriously and will exemplarily do that by exploring moral panics and its ambivalent relationship to media education. The second challenge refers to the necessity of becoming aware of new developments in media and technology and the (new) questions they raise for media education. In this paper, satellite images and cameraphones will be used as two examples to demonstrate that what has become so ubiquitous needs to be understood and examined as new ways of seeing and knowing. The third challenge for media education is then related to the education of media educators. Here, the argument is that the teachers’ own affective engagement with media has to become a key part of the teacher training of media educators.

본 논문은 현재의 조건 하에서 미디어교육이 직면해야 하는 도전들에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 미디어교육의 주요 측면들에 대한 개관과 그 기저를 이루는 철학, 그리고 문화연구 접근방식에서의 이론적 토대 등으로 시작한다. 그런 다음, 세가지 주요 도전을 제시한다. 첫째 도전은 미디어의 감정적 차원을 진지하게 다루어야 할 필요성을 말하며, 윤리적 공황과 이것이 미디어교육과 갖는 애증적 관계를 모색하는 방법으로 이를 예시하려고 한다. 두 번째 도전은 미디어와 공학의 새로운 발전과 이러한 발전이 미디어교육에 제기하는 새로운 문제들을 말한다. 본 논문에서는, 편재성(ubiquitous)을 갖는 것이 보기와 알기의 새로운 방식으로 이해되고 검증될 필요가 있다는 것을 나타내는 두 가지 예로 인공위성 영상과 카메라폰을 제시한다. 미디어교육의 세 번째 도전은 미디어교육자에 대한 교육으로 연결된다. 여기에서 논점은 교사 자신의 감정적인 미디어 참여가 미디어교육자로서의 교사 훈련에 있어 핵심적인 역할을 해야 한다는 것이다.
