Many of the Koreans who came to Japan during the colonial period consoled themselves with the familiar and nostalgic language, music, and dance of their homeland amidst the harsh realities of life in the land of their colonizers. After Korea’s liberation from Japan’s rule, some of them were forced to remain in Japan, and ethnic arts played a key role in sustaining their identity as ethnic Koreans who had to deal with the division of their homeland. This paper examines what ethnic Koreans in Japan have sought for in their pursuit of ethnic arts in Japanese society, focusing on the process of change from the colonial era to the post-liberation period. It also investigates the ways in which they have handed down the ethnic arts through generations.

식민지시기에 고향을 떠나 종주국인 일본에 건너 온 코리언들에게는 고향에서 귀에 익은 말이나 음악, 무용은 고통스러운 생활이나 고향을 그리워하는 마음을 달래주는 것이었다. 해방 후 일본에 남을 것을 선택할 수밖에 없었던 코리언들에게 민족예술은 조국의 남북분단에 휩쓸리면서 지신의 정체성을 확인하는 역할을 했었다. 본고는 식민지 시기부터 해방 후 일본에서 재일코리언들이 민족예술에 원한 것이 무엇이고, 그것을 어떻게 전승해 왔는가를 밝히려고 하는 것이다.
