The scope of this paper is limited to ‘Tongsokminyo’ (popular folk songs) in Gyeonggi province to trace aspects of transmission and the musical characteristics. 'Tongsokminyo' was chosen as the topic of this paper because it is one of main repertoires of traditional professional musicians of each region who employed their regional musical characteristics into their repertoire. In order to understand ‘Tongsokminyo’ in the context of overall music culture of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, general music culture of Gyeonggi Province except for minyo is surveyed. Then, The difference between Tongsokminyo and Hyangtominyo (folk songs of local customs) is outlined. Lastly, as the main focus of this paper, aspects of transmission and musical characteristics of Tongsokminyo in Gyeoggi Province are discussed. As a result, pentatonic, sol-mode, la-mode, gradual progression, authentic mode, use of Gukgeori jangdan, Semachi jangdan are found as the musical characteristics of Tongsokminyo. However, such characteristics are limited only to typical folk songs indigenous to Gyeonggi Province in Jingyeongtori (sol-mode) or bangyeongtori (la-mode). Consequently, those musical characteristics are not traced in current folk songs categorized as Tongsokminyo of Gyeonggi Province but introduced from other provinces. It is a fact that music of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province holds a very important position in Korean traditional music and that it has enriched the music culture of Korea. The importance of Gyeonggi Province music can be proved in that the ‘Arirang and Doraji’, the songs known worldwide as the most representative songs of Korea, are Gyeonggiminyo and that the accompanying music of ‘Hwagwanmu’(Flower Crown Dance) and ‘Buchae-chum’ (Fan Dance) belongs to music of Gyeionggi Province.

이 글은 서울․경기지방의 음악 중 ‘통속민요(通俗民謠)’에 한정하여 그 전승양상 을 살펴보고 음악적 특징을 고찰하였다. 이 지방 음악의 특징을 알아보기 위한 대상으로 통속민요를 선택한 이유는 특정 지역에서 활동하던 전통사회의 전문예능인들이 해 당지역의 음악적 특성을 자신들의 공연종목에 강하게 반영하여 왔기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 서울․경기지방 음악문화에 대한 전반적인 이해를 바탕으로 논의를 전개하기 위하여 먼저 민요를 제외한 경기지방 음악문화를 개관한 다음, 경기지방의 통속민요와 향토민요의 차이를 살펴보고, 끝으로 이 글의 주제인 경기 통속민요의 전승 양상과 음악적 특성을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 경기 통속민요의 음악적 특징은 5음음계, sol-선법과 la-선법, 순차진행, 정격선법, 굿거리장단과 세마치장단의 활용 등으로 드러났다. 그러나 이러한 특징은 진경토리(sol-mode)나 반경토리(la-mode)처럼 전형적인 경기지방 민요의 경우에 만 적용될 수 있고, 현재는 경기 통속민요에 속하지만 본래 다른 지방에서 전해져 온 통속민요는 이 같은 특징에서 벗어나 있다. 결국 서울․경기지방 음악은 한국 전통음악에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하며, 이 들 음악은 한국의 음악문화를 풍부하게 하였음을 알게 되었다. 한국음악에서 차지하는 경기도 음악의 중요성은 한국을 대표하는 노래로 세계적으로 널리 알려진 노래가 경기민요인 아리랑과 도라지라는 점으로도 충분히 알 수 있으며, 한국을 대표하는 무용으로 해외에 널리 알려진 화관무(花冠舞)와 부채춤의 반주음악도 이 지역 음악이라 는 점이 이를 증명한다고 할 수 있다.
