The purpose of this thesis was to examine and interpret metaphysical cognitions toward Korean dances of Holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties professionally related with characteristics of Korean dances. The major points of research interests in this thesis focused on the understanding and investigation of metaphysical cognitions through and about dances of Holders of important Intangible Cultural Properties performing special structures of Korean dances a characteristic among Korean traditional arts. A generally used in-depth interviewing method was selected among many qualitative research approaches to investigate these goals. The collected data were systemized, categorized and integrated after classifying their significances. From the researches of metaphysical cognition of the Holders of important Intangible Cultural Properties toward characteristics of Korean dances were interpreted in detail and reached the following conclusions. The characteristics of Korean dances were categorized in terms of formality, expression and concept. In conclusions, metaphysical cognitions of Holders of important Intangible Cultural Properties toward Korean dances deeply explained theoretical backgrounds of Korean dances as also described in a wide scope of literary studies and many precedent researches.

본 연구는 중요무형문화재로 지정되어 있는 한국춤 분야의 예능보유자들로부터 한국춤의 특징에 대한 형이상학적 인식을 질적 연구를 통해 접근하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서 의도하고 있는 연구의 주된 초점은 한국의 전통예술 중 한국춤이 라는 특정한 체제를 형성하고 수행하는 한국춤에 대한 예능보유자들의 춤을 통한, 한국춤의 특징에 대한 형이상학적 인식의 이해와 규명에 맞추어져 있다. 이에 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 중요무형문화재 예능보유자들의 한국춤에 대한 형이상학적 인식 속에서 규명된 한국춤의 특징은 (1) 한국춤의 형식적 특징 (2) 한국춤의 표현적 특징 (3) 한국춤의 개념적 특징으로 세분화 하여 연구 되어졌다. 첫째, 한국춤의 형식적인 특징은 연구 참가자들의 진술을 토대로 지역적․시대적 특성, 악․가․무 일체, 음양오행사상, 여백의 미, 계층적 특성으로 다시 세분화 되어졌다. 둘째, 한국춤의 표현적 특징은 반복적 움직임, 절제, 내적발산, 한과 신명, 흥과 멋, 곡선과 회무로 구분할 수 있었다. 셋째, 연구 참가자들의 진술을 토대로 한국춤의 개념적 특징을 자연사상, 자연미, 신비감, 정․중․동, 철학성의 내재로 다시 세분화 되어졌다.
