Tiananmen has been employed to advocate abandonment of the Cultural Revolution and to reveal
the people’s thirst for freedom from totalitarian control by many contemporary Chinese artists such as Zhang Xiaogang(b.1958), Yue Minjun(b.1962), Wang Mingxian. To them Tiananmen seems to be regarded as symbol representing the chinese tradition of the past imperial era and allegorizing the anti-tradition of the Revolution.
Tiananmen was the frontispiece of the Forbidden City, located in the middle of Beijing, once the
imperial capital. The gate and the city should have been demolished as the vestiges of feudalism
according to the communist ideology of the state during the Cultural Revolution. However, Beijing
was transformed into a idealogical centre of construction of proletarian utopia and Tiananmen, the
principal entry to the Imperial Palace, was transformed into a utopian square for the proletarians by the new Communist China. Beijing has served as political and ceremonial milieu in the history of modern China, and Tiananmen has served as the stages for many critical events: the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the celebrations of the victories of socialism in the 1950s, the massive rallies of the Cultural Revolution, and the protest movement of 1989. Eventually Beijing along with Tiananmen maintains its characteristics of physical integrity and ideological coherence despite the tremendous changes around it for so long.
This paper explores the images and visual representation of Tiananmen in traditional and
contemporary chinese art. Tracing and interpreting the history of its image would provide us with
new perspectives on China and its art today.
