Traditionally in China Xiaoxue has been meant to be the interpretation and explanation of phrases composing canonical text like Shijing詩經 or Shujing書經. The field of xiaoxue is limited in the sphere of textual interpretation of traditional canons, so it belongs to philology in a broad sense. On the other hand, it focuses on how to understand and explain a word, that is a character constructing the sentences of canonical texts. It means that xiaoxue includes the study of structure of characters as well as the study of sound and meaning of them. From these microscopic viewpoint, it can belong to linguistics. However modern linguistics in China has been neglected the field of traditional xiaoxue. I suppose traditional philology xiaoxue had a great influence on the study of Chinese language and character. Therefore in this paper I studied the formation and transformation of the concept ‘xiaoxue’, which is connected with the research for the Chinese language and character
