The retro of fashion originates from the inclusive expression and retro-style of post-modernism. Fashion is a fundamental way to represent a culture and has a power to reconstruct culture through visual metaphor. Some of the elements used are gender, time, place, and occasion each of which may be combined with one another to create a new aesthetic value. In particular, retro strongly emphasizes the concept of time. Over time, the concept of time has been categorized into circular and straight time, and objective and subjective time, such concept has been changing constantly contributing to new historical perspectives as well as culture. Retro in modern fashion does rather borrows elements from earlier fashions than repeat them. For instance, representative styles, silhouettes, and items of earlier fashions are combined with modern materials, new technology and modern designs. In addition, traditional fabrics, patterns, and past production techniques may be re-introduced and nostalgic decorations, hair-style, and accessories re-appear. In this study, retro of modern fashion design is analyzed by examining the collections of two world renowned British designers John Galliano and Alexander McQueen and their retro trends and methods of reinterpretation. Their collections from 2000 to the present day are examined, retro trend and its characteristics are analyzed. As a result, the 21st century retro fashion has a tendency to run away from the present, reality, admires colorful and decorative styles, and accomplish creativity.
Retro connects the past with the present as well as the present with the future in fields of fashion, art, culture and other industries. It reflects trends and combines and interprets designers’ sensibility, and redefined retro in the 21st centry context. In other words, retro is a combination of a variety of subjects that allow interaction and complexity.

패션에서의 레트로경향은 포스트모더니즘에 의한 표현의 포괄성과 복고성에 근거한다고 볼 수 있다. 패션은 근본적으로 문화의 특성을 나타내는 형식이며 시각적 은유를 통하여 문화를 재구성하는 강력한 힘을 가지고 있다. 여기에 사용되는 요소들은 성(gender)이나 시간(T), 장소(P), 상황(O) 등으로 각각 조합되어 새로운 미적 가치를 형성하게 된다. 특히 레트로의 복고적 성향은 시간성의 개념이 강하게 부각된다. 오랜 역사를 거치는 동안 인간이 바라보는 시간적 관점은 순환적 시간관과 직선적 시간관, 객관적 시간관과 주관적 시간관으로 구분되며, 그 개념 또한 다양하게 변화 발전되어 역사관과 문화를 형성해 오고 있다. 시간성이 반영된 현대 패션에서의 복고적 요소는 과거에 대한 역사적 내용의 단순한 재현이 아닌 이미지의 차용으로 표현된다. 즉, 과거를 풍미하였던 대표적 스타일, 실루엣, 특정 아이템이 현대적 재질, 새로운 기
술, 현대적인 디자인과의 결합으로 나타나기도 하고 전통적인 직물과 패턴, 과거의 제작 기술 등이 도입되기도 하며, 향수를 불러일으키는 장식, 헤어스타일, 액세서리 등이 함께 출현하기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 현대패션에 나타난 레트로 경향을 연구하고자 독창성과 창의적 디자인으로 주목 받고 있는 영국 출신의 디자이너인 존 갈리아노와 알렉산더 맥퀸의 컬렉션을 분석하여 이들의 레트로 경향과 그 재해석의 방법에 대해 연구하고자 한다. 연구의 범위는 2000년 이후 현재까지 컬렉션에 나타난 의상의 분석을 통하여 이들의 레트로 경향과 그 특성을 분석하고자 한다. 결과적으로 21세기의 레트로 패션은 현재의 위축된 상황에서 벗어나 과거의 화려하며 장식적인 스타일을 표방하고 재창조하려는 주체적인 성향을 나타낸다. 레트로는 패션과 예술, 문화 산업 등에서 시대를 떠나 과거와 현재, 현재와 미래를 이어주는 연결고리의 역할을 하고 있다. 이들은 과거의 역사나 이미지를 재현하는 단계에서 벗어나 시대의 흐름인 트렌드를 반영하여 디자이너의 감성을 복합적으로 접목하고 재해석하는 과정을 거쳐 2000년대 레트로 스타일을 재해석 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 즉, 한가지의 레트로 특성을 접목하기 보다는 상호 관계와 복합성을 가진 다중적 주제의 결합으로 나타났다.
