This study explores how traditional costumes of the ethnic minority residing in Yunnan, China have undergone some dramatic changes due to several factors such as modernization and introduction of foreign cultures. This study may be looked at from the globalization perspective which implies westernization, development in transportation and communication technology. This study is different from some of the existing literatures on the modernization of the traditional costume of the ethnic minority in China, which mainly focused on the figurative beauty of their garments. The objectives of this study are as follows: It first investigates the geographical environment and the ethnic group in the area. Secondly, it contemplates the costume of the minority. And then, through observations and interviews, it explores the modernization process of their costume. Based on data collected, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on the modernization of Yunnan costumes. Colorful and diverse costumes of Yunnan minority’s have been often commended through numerous literatures and media. However, the study conducted in the eight regions of Yunnan in January, 2009 indicates that the costume has lost its value as a daily wear and became ceremonial costume for the special occasions. Similar to many other Asian countries adopted the western costumes as a part of the new culture during the period of modernization, the minority in Yunnan, China also came to wear the western costumes as admiration of the western culture as well as the Han(Chinese). Such change is attributable to the development of transportation and communication technology and higher education level and economic power. Yunnan’s ethnic minority’s case is interesting because the minority has just stop wearing their traditional costume just recently. Change of traditional culture and costume in the ethnic minority Yunnan, China along with other Asian countries could be inevitable in the midst of globalization. However, efforts to preserve the traditional culture of each nation and ethnic group must be maintained.

본 연구는 중국 운남성 소수민족의 전통복식이 외래문화의 유입을 비롯한 여러 가지 변화의 요인들 속에서 어떻게 변모되고 있는지에 대한 것이다. 운남성 소수민족복식의 현대화에 대한 연구는 지난 수세기 동안에 걸친 서구 제국주의의 침투와 교통ㆍ정보통신의 혁신적인 발달 등으로 인한 세계화 현상과 맥락을 같이한다. 본 연구의 목표로는 첫째, 중국 운남성의 환경과 소수민족에 대한 고찰, 둘째, 운남성 소수민족의 복식문화에 대한 고찰, 셋째, 참여관찰과 심층면접을 통한 운남성 소수민족 복식의 현대화에 대한 연구, 넷째, 운남성에서 복식의 현대화에 대한 논의 등이다. 운남성 소수민족의 화려하고 다양한 전통복식은 많은 문헌과 매체 등을 통해서 잘 알려져 왔고, 매우 화려하고 다양한 형식적 특징을 가지고 있었다. 그러나 2009년 1월에 운남성 8개 지역에서 실시한 참여관찰과 심층면접을 통한 연구결과, 운남성 소수민족의 복식은 일상복의 지위를 상실하였고, 특별한 날에 착용하는 의례복으로 전락하였다. 운남성의 소수민족들은 자신들의 정체성이 표현된 복식이 아닌 서구복식을 한족과 서구문물에 대한 동경심 등에서 착용하게 되었다. 이러한 변화는 교통과 통신의 발달과 소수민족의 교육과 경제수준의 향상 등으로 인한 것이다. 이러한 현상은 운남성이 특히 중국은 내의 그 어느 지역보다도 다양하고 화려한 소수민족의 복식문화를 가지고 있었으며, 최근까지도 일상적으로 착용되어 온 지역이라는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 세계화 시대에 운남성 소수민족을 비롯한 아시아 각국의 전통문화와 복식의 변화는 불가피한 것인지 모르지만, 각 국가나 민족의 전통문화를 보존하고 계승하려는 노력이 뒤따라야 할 것이다.
