본 연구는 군에서 복무하고 있는 신세대 병사들을 대상으로 자화상과 가족화를 통하여 심리적인 특성을 파악하여 보았다. 연구의 대상은 강원도 W시에 위치한 중대급 12개 부대 병사 341명으로 인물화와 동적가족화를 그리게 하여 그림 1,023장을 수집하였다. 자화상의 구조적 분석 결과, 사회에서 생활을 하는 자유분방한 대체적인 신세대의 성향과는 달리 열등감을 느끼며, 의존적인 경향이 나타나는 것으로 드러났다. 동적가족화의 분석 결과, 신세대 병사들은 가족을 긍정적으로 지각하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그렇지만 군생활의 특성 때문에 가족과의 의사소통 단절에서 오는 불안반응이 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 자화상과 동적가족화가 신세대 병사의 성향을 파악하고 그들에게 적절한 도움을 제공할 수 있는 도구로 활용될 수 있음이 밝혀졌다
