In the revision of the 7th curriculum, 'ethics curriculum', in particular review and direction of 'Oriental ethics' is presented as follows. We look to ways of an educational direction of 'Oriental ethics' for practical school education preparing correction & supplement in the coming days or the revision of the 8th curriculum. First, 'ethics education' was originally ‘national ethics education’. That education aimed at developing modern 'public awareness' missed & delayed in unfortunate Korean modern history, modernizing independently & developing the nation and building up 'civic awareness' suitable for modern industrial development. It's advisable that Oriental ethics education should be discussed connected to its original goal of education because Oriental ethics (traditional oriental thoughts, ethics and culture) is introduced under the same educational goal. Second, applied ethics is said to supplement a part which misses ideology in the 7th curriculum but there is a limit as to what applied ethics requiring specialized knowledge is dealt with as only ethics. The ethics education, of course, can play an illuminating role in education of developing ethical thinking. Considering Eastern and Western ethics theories are balanced well together, it's good to combine setting up an issue (problem)-centered subject with education of developing thinking ability. Third, Eastern philosophy, in the side of ethics education, has to be studied distinctively in three aspects: conservation and transmission as traditional culture, tie with civic ethics & innovation of tradition for national development and analysis of strengths and weaknesses & succession & development as a thought. Modernized interpretation of Oriental thought has to keep the perspective of civilization of universalism and adopt the method of Eastern and Western comparative philosophy. Fourth, traditional ethics (Oriental ethics) education in school and social ethics (civic ethics) education in society should keep pace with each other because they are mutually complimentary. Establishing social ethics has no option but to follow ethics of Western civic society. It's desirable civic ethics and traditional ethics should compromise, yet civic ethics has to play the most active part. Then we Koreans get the great wisdom from traditional ethics by creative interpretation and make it cultural soil. Therefore, Oriental ethics contains important contents including insight into the universe like Neo-Confucianism, Confucianism's rational awareness towards human and society, cultivating one's mind religiously & building up one's character and cultural awareness about manners as traditional Korean high culture (yangban culture).

근자 2007 개정교육과정(7차 교육과정 개편)에서 ‘윤리교과’, 특히 ‘동양윤리’ 부분에 대해 검토 및 방향을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘윤리교육’은 원래 ‘국민윤리교육’이었는데, 그 교육목표는 불행한 근대 한국 역사에서 누락되고 지체(遲滯)된 근대적인 ‘국민의식’의 배양, 주체적인 근대화와 국가 발전, 아울러 근대적 산업 발전에 맞는 근대적 ‘시민의식’의 배양이었다. 동양윤리(동양의 전통 사상과 윤리 및 문화) 분야가 이 교육목표 아래 도입되었으므로 동양윤리 교육의 문제도 이 원래의 교육목표와 연관하여 논하는 것이 바람직하다. 둘째, 2007 개정교육과정에서 이데올로기 부분 빠진 데 응용윤리로써 보충한다고 하지만, 전문지식이 요구되는 응용윤리를 윤리로써만 다루는 데는 한계가 있다. 물론 그러한 윤리교육이 윤리적 사고 교육에 계몽적인 역할은 충분히 할 수 있다. 동․서양 윤리 이론들이 적절히 함께 참여하도록 고려되면서 이슈(문제) 중심의 주제 설정과 사고력 배양 교육을 병행하는 것이 좋다. 셋째, 동양철학은 윤리교육이라는 측면에서 전통문화로서의 보호 전승, 시민윤리와의 접합 및 국가발전을 위한 전통의 혁신, 사상으로서의 장단점 분석 및 계승 발전이라는 세 가지 관점을 잘 구별하여 연구해야 한다. 동양사상의 현대적 해석에는 인류 보편의 문명사적 관점을 유지하면서, 동서비교철학적 방법도 원용해야 한다. 넷째, 전통윤리(동양윤리)의 학교 교육과 사회에서의 사회윤리(시민윤리) 교육은 상호 보완적이므로 병행되어야 한다. 사회윤리의 확립은 역시 서구의 시민사회의 윤리가 될 수 밖에 없다. 이것과 전통윤리의 절충이 바람직하나, 역시 시민윤리가 주가 되어야 하고, 전통윤리는 창의적 해석을 통하여 큰 지혜를 얻고, 한국인으로서의 문화적 토양으로 삼는 것이 필요하다. 그리하여 동양윤리는 성리학이 보여준 우주에 대한 깊은 통찰, 유교 윤리의 인간과 사회에 대한 합리적 인식, 그리고 종교적 수양과 인격 함양, 그리고 한국 전통의 고급문화(양반문화)로서의 예의범절의 문화 의식은 중요한 내용이 된다.
