This study aims to suggest general ideas about the basic concept of Universal Design (UD) and the feature of Universal Thinking that enhances non-disabled people’s understanding of others with different physical conditions. To that end, in this paper, I will review the process of the Universal Design exhibition titled “Salpim_Design to Care” as seen in the Project Design section of the 2009 Gwangju Design Biennale. In addition, I will ensure that it makes a contribution to audiences’ understanding of UD to set up a UD guideline and apply the principle of designs to exhibitions and managements. Accordingly, I will propose the use of the guideline for the ppp evaluation as a future goal that Gwanju Biennale should meet, given that it can help set up exhibition spaces which can fit well with the purpose of exhibitions. By doing so, I aim to provide basic information necessary for planning future exhibitions utilizing Universal Design, or designs similar to it. The project, “Salpim Design to Care”and the work were developed, exhibited, and removed from the exhibition section, in accordance with the master timetable for all of the events of the Biennale. In addition, based on the report on the exhibition process, I will provide my suggestions for Universal Design exhibitions from the academic perspective. By reviewing the process, I reached the conclusion that the exhibits and firsthand experience activities drew a shared empathy toward the concept of Universal Design from the audience. In addition, the exhibition provided the lesson that we need to appreciate diversity, and try to understand those in different conditions by viewing the world from their standpoint. This will bring a cultural turning point with diversity to broadly embrace individual mind and consciousness of unified humanity limitation. In conclusion, I will suggest the need to reflect the results of a variety of existing studies for Universal Design in actual exhibitions and events on the basis of seven principles of design, thereby making exhibition processes more systematic.

본 연구는 2009광주디자인비엔날레의 프로젝트전시 중「살핌(慮)/Salpim_Design to Care」전시의 유니버설디자인전시 전개과정을 살펴봄으로써 UD의 기본적 개념과 함께 일반인과 신체적 조건이 다른 사람의 입장을 헤아리기 위한 Universal Thinking의 특성에 대한 전반적인 이해를 돕고자 한다. 이와 함께 UD의 전시가이드라인 설정과 이에 따르는 디자인 원리를 전시공간과 전시연출로 적용하는 것도 관람객들의 UD에 대한 이해를 도울 수 있는 방법임을 밝히고자 한다. 이에 따라 PPP의 평가에 대한 가이드라인 활용은 전시취지와 목적에 맞는 전시디자인 공간구축에 많은 도움을 줄 수 있는 사안이므로 광주디자인비엔날레의 개선과제로 제안함으로써 향후 이와 유사한 유니버설디자인의 전시기획에 필요한 기초자료를 제시하기 위한 목적이 있다. 전시기획서 작성에서부터 전시실행, 전시운영에 이르기까지 재단법인광주비엔날레 전체 전시행사 추진일정에 따라 진행된 전시 프로젝트는 작품 및 전시공간의 철거와 함께 완료되었다. 이와 함께 본 연구는 결과보고의 내용정리를 바탕으로 학술적 성격에 맞게 해석하여 작성하고자 한다. 전시내용의 성과로는 전시장에 연출된 제품과 체험교육을 통해 유니버설에 대한 공감을 이끌어 내는 것이다. 이와 동시에 조건의 차이를 인식하고 나와 다른 조건에 놓인 사람들의 어려움과 이를 배려할 수 있는 방법을 타자(他者)의 눈높이에서 사물을 바라보아야 한다는 시사점을 도출하는 것이다. 이는 바로 획일화된 인간성에 대하여 개개인의 마음과 의식에 이르기까지 폭넓게 포용할 수 있는 다양성을 지닌 문화적 전환점의 계기가 될 것이다. 이에 따라 본 논문을 통해 도출된 제언은 향 후 보다 체계적인 전시진행을 위해 유니버설의 7가지 디자인 원리에 기준을 두고 좀 더 다양한 연구와 이에 따르는 결과들을 전시장과 행사 운영에 적극적으로 도입해야 할 필요성을 제기하고자 한다.
